Ski-biking and MTB seem like a perfect match. Why not ride all year long? Now you can. Many riders tried this decades ago when a ski bike was just some welded tubes attached to some boards. Today, you can use your own bike and easily swap out your wheels / cranks for skis / footpegs and ride your own rig on the snow! Better yet, head to your closest ski-bike friendly resort and shred down the mountain.

I think the greatest potential is for parents who [like me] are too old to try to learn to ski, or heaven forbid try snowboarding. But riding a bike -- thats as easy as s*x, right? [or did I get that backwards...lol]. Anyhoo, now you can jump on your bike and ride down the slopes with your kids, and NOT be confined to the lodge.

My neighbor has a ski-bike, but I haven't been out with him on it yet. He took a couple 4x4s, attached them to shortened skis and mounted them to a bike in place of wheels. He welded pegs onto the bottom bracket for one's feet. He notes that its preferable to dedicate an old frame to such a toy rather than try to have a dual-use bike. Thus one can eliminate pesky details like brakes, deraillers, etc from the frame.

Sorry Kenny...you can do all those things on a bike with wheels. And ride on pavement and flat surfaces.
The ski bike takes away a lot of things you can do on a bike. It also limits you to a place with a ski lift that will bring the thing up the hill. I hope you're not trying to sell these things, the market is very small and specialized. It's easier to use skis to put them in the car to drive to the ski area.

Every post is a hype? Derrrr. Thats like accusing someone that every one of their posts is singing the praises of mountain biking. DUH! It IS a mountain bike! I just took my wheels off for the winter so I could ride down the slopes.

The WAY COOL thing is that I originally bought the mtb to convert it to a skibike. But last summer I threw the wheels and cranks back on to get a work out. Now I totally love mtb'ng. And, since it is a bike, Im not sure how I have limited biking, it sure seems like I have expanded my possibilities...

I cant be the only guy who loves riding in ALL conditions, even snow. Anyhoo, maybe I am in the wrong place. I thought I was gonna find people who share biking passons...

Since you listed it in shameless promotions that means you are trying to sell them. That can be a little annoying if that is the real agenda. Are you trying to sell them or not? I was trying to say the market is small don't spend money making them.

Did you miss the point completely that lots of people ride in the snow and down mountains and on glare ice all year long in places you can not go on the ski bike with bikes with wheels? Then instantly WITHOUT working on your bike you can roll right out on the road.

You are not the only guy who loves riding in all conditions. You seem to be one of the few that don't realize that winter snow and ice riding is very popular with bikes with wheels and more practical. **********?? I'm just being realistic.

I'm trying to save you money and trouble. If I had a ski bike it would cut down on the amount of time I ride in the snow considerably. And it would increase the cost by so much it's silly to even talk about it. This is reality.

You should be selling in the promotions part of this forum.That's why this is considered spam. It is interesting and some people may have questions, but you're selling.

This IS the Winter Cycling discussion forum, right? Im talking about riding a mountain bike on the SNOW. There are plenty of options on riding on the snow, right? Plenty of fun times to be had, right? Can we still discuss options here even if YOU dont think they are fun 2manybikes?

Lemmie get this straight: anything listed in the Shameless Promotions section cannot be discussed anywhere else? I did not list a site here, I did not ask anyone to buy anything here, and I did not ask anyone to cut down on bike riding. I am trying to spark discussion on just the opposite. Are you saying industry dudes cant be enthusiasts? Good lord 2many, I didnt even mention here what I brand I ride.

What I ride is a DH bike with some accessories [and pretty cool ones in my opinion]. Does it mean I have to do some "work" on my bike? Yup. Heaven forbid! I happen to love fiddling w/ my bike. It seems every time I fiddle I find somethin worn out or somethin to improve upon. Maybe you have too many bikes and you hire people to fiddle for you??

Rather than be a threadnazi, how 'bout fostering some fun, positive discussion about winter cycling?? How bout posting some cool winter cycling pics?

Bicycle or sled?

This is not really a bicycle because it doesn't have wheels. It has no drivetrain or pedals and therefore you cannot "ride" it.

It does have a seat and bike frame though.

To each his own, but to me a bicycle is something with wheels you pedal to get somewhere.

lets cut the guy a bit of slack- this is not as bad as the townie thread. And he did more or less admit an interest by posting in the shameless promotion thread so he was not so stealthy.

OK the X-bike is a more like sled than a bike and not that practical but it looks like it could be fun if you could find a ski resort that would allow them. I would like to try one.

Sled? Hmmmm. I agree my bike does not have wheels, cranks or chain stuff. But it does have: handlebars, stem, headset, head tube, forks, shocks, top tube, down tube, saddle, seat post, and most imporant...a rider.

Since I am riding downhill in the snow, I can do it more efficiently without wheels. And without wheels, im not sure that I need the cranks and all that other stuff.

So in the whole parts-of-a-bike pie chart, I would say it looks like a bike. I have swapped out only a few parts for other accessories which, by the way, HELP me ride better given what I wanna do. Which is: ripping downhill riding a DH bike, takin huge hits, then sittin on the chair lift relaxing on my way up the hill thinkin of my next run. Take a look at the pic. This doesnt look like a bike to you???

BTW, love you guys, but can someone who rides DH please let me know what you do in the snow? I'm gettin a little punch drunk by dooods who just wanna slam my fun riding style.

Bingo!

You have several options for stopping:

1. Hockey stop just like a skier [they dont have brakes either]. You simply lean into the turn, and kick out the back end and slide on your edge till you stop. Works well at all speeds.

2. Throw down your feet a la Fred Flintstone. Works very well at slow to medium speeds.

3. My favorite: find a goofball snowboarder sittin in the middle of the run and use them. Just kiddin.

My wife, who is not a biker chick [although I am workin on that...], found stopping not to be problem even on her first ride down a blue run. Just turning uphill worked well for her.
