A respirator to protect the lower face. Would have never thought of that, but I have spent many hours wearing one for work and not sure I could pant hard enough in one to commit bicycling.

I removed the filters and little elastomer discs so there is no real resistance to breathing. That picture shows my first attempt to use one - I made a better effort later. Details here if you're interested.

Ah that makes sense now. Without the elastomer discs it should flow enough air to ride, but keep that nice bubble of preheated air to breathe. An added bonus is the post apocalypse look the mask gives, but at subzero who cares.

Old pic but here you go; not icicles per say, but a pretty solid layer of rime:



End of the 2011 Frosty Bottom race, 25 mile division; finished 5th with a moustache-barred mountain bike, after starting from the very, very back (the only people behind me at the start line were skiers). I've been in Hawaii during the last two Frosties, but I'm entering 2014's Frosty, and I'm totally gonna podium this year. Gonna show up early to get a good starting position, I've got a drop bar cross bike for icy trail, a fat bike for soft trail, and all the really fast dudes race in the 50 mile division; look out y'all, I'm gonna be a contender!

I gotta get myself a straw so I can drink while I'm out for a ride. Getting the mask off isn't too difficult, but getting it back on correctly can be a challenge.

The stuff has to go on in a certain order so I occasionally have problems if I'm sleepy.

First an open face balaclava pulling below my chin, then a respirator to keep my glasses from fogging up, then I pull over a neck tube where I cut a hole for the respirator, finally the helmet.

With the neck tube pulled up to just underneath my eyes I don't need to use the goggles much unless I have a constant headwind. The goggles don't sit quite right because of the respirator, but it works. I usually wear the respirator setup if it is below -15C or warmer but with high winds.

The goggles are Smith Knowledge OTG (glasses compatible). The helmet is a Smith Variant, non-brimmed version. Since I need to be able to lift the goggles one handed on the go I figured the brim would just get in the way. The helmet came with a bunch of insulation for around the ears, but it was unnecessary and got in the way. Conveniently I can raise the goggles without bumping the mirror. I can't do that with the take a look mirror on my summer helmet.
