I read a few articles about the guy. He always mentions that he is riding a specalized bike, (using specalized as an adjective, not a proper noun). Looking at the pictures it's a Surly, but he never mentions it by name.

Geostationary satellites can't hover over the poles. Satellites have to pass over the poles. I don't know if there are enough satellites passing by to keep the south pole covered all the time. If not, they have to wait for one to pass by to get the internet. I suppose it's the same with GPS.

The Spaniard has apparently had to resort to skiing the last few miles to the pole. He has run out of food and is basically living on the trailmix he has left. The American is about a day behind him but is still just using his bike. He has plenty of food but this is largely a function of the fact that he got several resupplies whereas the Spanish guy was trying to go in one shot. Supposing the Spanish guy gets there first but the American rides his bike the whole way, who should get credit for being the first person to get to the south pole on bike? I can't tell if the Spanish guy is dragging his bike in a sled or just abandoned it.

The only complaint I'd even entertain is that she's got three wheels and therefore isn't a bicycle, but even that's kinda thin...As far as route, she realized that by choosing the right vehicle for the terrain, she could open up a lot of options for path. It seems wrong to penalize her for being smarter than both of the boys.
