A Shimano UN-52 cartridge bottom bracket is a nice one to get, if you decide to pick up a new one. No adjustments possible or necessary, and they last quite a while. Probably about $30-35 at your LBS. Maybe they'll install it at a reduced price, since you've had so much trouble.

Removing the crankarms from the spindles doesn't affect the bottom bracket's bearing adjustment, so that shouldn't be an issue. Hope it all works out for you
