Around here, the ones that do well at both either reduce volume or take a break in the summer.

no doubt.. I was over dressed and HOT... but the descent was nice with all the stuff I had on. I hope you had more waiting for you at the top for the way down.

True dat. The killer was a heavier base layer. I started with two full bottles of water and drank both of them. However, there was little evaporation and I carried all the water in sweat soaked base layer and clothes. I felt like I swam the climb.

^^This. Next season I plan to keep my road racing season pretty light - outside of training crits, maybe 10-15 races at most, and with my last road race probably in mid-July. Pretty similar to what I did this year, actually, though that was partly unintentional. I basically plan to make the local road races my big targets and won't do a lot else. And probably won't start my season until April.

I'm hoping to really, really crush, obvs.

Edit: if things are going well and I'm getting close, I'll probably do more races.

if only @mattm had hung on we could have shared the glory of 3rd and 4th. my favorite part is the head-down world-champ-stripes specialized rider pulling the group back. They didn't make it and I don't care if he's 60 years old. :O

Mattm needs a faster helmet. Were you flicking your left elbow or shifting with the right hand or something else? It seems so wrong for old guys to try to steal the kids candy.

I could've had the most aero helmet in the universe, still wouldn't have wanted to withstand the pain..

I hate the look of our team helmets this year so I didn't wear it: Smith Overtake Cycle Helmets Men's: Smith United States

I must have been shifting or transitioning positions.

I think he fell off because of all the pockets on the back of his jersey. Skinsuits are winsuits. (or 3rd/4th in my situation)

Of course... I could not see that in the pic. Were the pockets stuffed with Mars bars and a little can of Coke? That would explain a lot.

from Cal Aggie - Jim Elder

With teammates up the road I was just watching Dan. Then he was watching me. And the third pic is cool to me because I went wide and cut to the inside and passed all those guys to move up before the next corner to get off the back of the selection. It seems I have no issues with cornering, but the crowd and space to other riders sketches me out. Something to work on.

Same crit but the "pro" race (that had no pros, and was mostly squirrely cat 3's & juniors).

Here's what I look like when I'm losing/getting 5th (me on the left):
