I'm not sure if I'm racing, b/c my form is crap right now. I might hop in the B race just to play in the pack and get spit out after a couple laps. See you there.

Ah, this thread takes me back down memory lane to my (relative) youth and prior racing days in the early 1990s. I enjoyed the Wells Ave crits and remember placing every now and then. I rode for MIT and BRC. Now, I am just back at it after a long layoff trying to get to the point where I can stay with the pack for the distance in Austin at a series held at The Driveway. Have fun at Wells Ave!!! I have fond memories of the crits there. However, do I miss the weather in March and April? Can't compare to Austin :-)

A teammate and I will be there in the Bs as well. We may be handing out flyers advertising the Beanpot crit next Sunday. Expect many futile attacks!

I'm jealous of your weather BostonGarden. It blows here and I mean that for real b/c it's raining sideways.
Leo, I'll be wearing BRC kit and am one of the bald guys there (there's more than one of us). What I'm riding will depend on whether or not I'm racing.

Yeah you'll have to get in those races and upgrade! Most all of the ECCC races will count so I'm sure you're close by now. The C training race will definitely be slower than the collegiate Cs.

I think generally the ECCC collegiate Cs are a just a little slower than a full 100-man cat 4 field. Of course the competition in collegiate is more uniform and in cat 4 you (if you're strong) will end up really racing against the top 25% or so. These training races vary though, usually depending on whether or not there is a real race the same day. Either way you're probably fast enough for the B(cat3/4) race at Wells, but worse comes to worse you win the C!

If it'll make you feel any better, this morning we had a very heavy downpour with some pretty good size hail!!!!! (yeah, some dents in the car) And, there has been a bit of a chill in the air today -- only upper 50s to low 60s...

ah yes i need 4 more races. I'll be fine in Cs though, i mean i did stay off the bike for 2 weeks after my crash/injury.. and am only getting some of my fitness back now. This will be purely for beanpot training.. and i guess if i can hold my own im gonna practice actual attacking and trying to break away without anyone latching onto me.

Either way, see you Sunday!

just a possible BF group ride idea:

After the B's race I'll likely be going out for a 90-120 minute ride (28 mile CRW loop??) with a few teammates. All are welcome.. Just giving the heads up so that if you want the miles, you can bring extra food/water/clothes.

Cheers and see y'all tomorrow!

Aside from a crash in the C race (everyones bodies seem ok, a few bikes lost some limbs, though), a great day at wells.

2 teammates took 1st and 2nd in the C's and I coulndt be happier for them. Congrats Mat and Jason!

I put in huge work for the 1st 22 laps of the B's race. Set new CP10 and CP30 records with many efforts up into the 500+ Watt ranges. We couldnt consolidate a break for more than a lap or 2, but it was a great workout, and I accomplished exactly what I had wanted to. I averaged nearly LTP (317w) for the first 45 minutes of the race... I'm sure NP would have been huge, if I had cycling peaks
So for the last 8 laps, I sat in hoping for a nice sprint... came into the final turn in PERFECT position: 4th wheel behind 3 strong teammates. a F'in car neutralized the sprint though and by this point I was out of position. I attacked futily coming into the last lap, then found a dead wheel for the sprint and ended up with a best-it-could-have-been 7th place finish in the sprint.

Finished the training with another 1:50 of tempo work in the drizzle with Matt. 3100 Kjs today to cap off a monster week getting ready for the Battenkill. Very satisfied!

I met bitterkitten (ken) today and Oppie. Whats up gents!?! great to meet you both and thanks Ken for the tools and pump. Hope to ride with you both in the future.

love this sport,

-L

Yeah there were a lot of cars on the course today. Kinda sketchy. I hope that dead wheel wasn't mine! I think I finished around there as well, desperately trying to hold onto the eventual winner. . . and failing. Got passed right before the line by a few. People didn't really seem as willing to keep the pace up today. Maybe it was the weather?

Nice race Leo and good to know that other BFers were there too. Yeah, crazy day both with the size of the fields and the car traffic. That math club makes it really difficult to keep the course clear. I also can't think of a worse way to spend Sunday mornings as a kid either - stuck in extra math classes. That would just suck.

Slightly off topic, I know, but have the Tuesday night worlds rides really started yet?

Probably a better chance to introduce myself compared to the front of the Wells pack.

yes, I've done the tuesday night world the past 3 weeks. We've been meeting about half a mile from Nahanton park though. Just continue going west past Nahanton Park's entrance and through the first light, over the highway and take a left at the next light. We all meet there, you'll see everyone.

It's been fast, so plan on a good workout.

cheers,

-Leo

How's Wells go today? Was in Vegas this past week so didn't go...how'd ya do in the B's?? By the way....I'd imagine you'd be doing ok in the A race there no?? I see you are always in the top of the strong 4's and moving or already to cat 3.....congrats. Just made it to cat 54 myself and am looking forward to getting my arse handing to me in the B race every Sunday for a while... Although top 5's have been fairly easy in the C's. I imagine the C race is much slower than the B race.

^^^^
It was pretty sketchy for the first 5 laps or so. There was crash early on in the B race, but I don't really know too much about it. I just heard the sound of metal, carbon, and flesh hitting the deck at 20+ mph. Things settled down though, and it was pretty smooth. Lots of 3's were in the B race, so things got a little fast at times. According to my computer, the average speed was 25mph with my max speed at around 33mph (I didn't go for any of the primes and sat up for the final sprint.) I think the final sprint was clocked around 36-37mph.

I don't know if the C race is any slower then the B, and if it is, it's probably not significant. The big difference is going to be the field size. The B race typically has way more racers then the C race, so moving around is going to be more difficult and sketchy stuff like changing your line during a turn or swerving to avoid the rough spots will have harsher consequences. For you first B race, I really suggest picking a wheel and sticking to him/her for the first 1/3 to a 1/2 of the race. Once you get comfortable with having that many people around you (and often bumping/rubbing) then try to move around more.

Good luck, and see you in the B's!

Got there too late for the B's (overslept), and just marshaled the A's. Both B's and A's were way fast this weekend. The A's avg'd 27 mph. I'm in no shape for racing though since I haven't touched the bike in 2 weeks. Prolly going to do the Hartford Crit to get back into shape this weekend, though.

^^^ If you haven't the Cyclonauts Crit, I suggest that one too. It's at the Stafford Springs race course, and is super fun.

Hmm, yeah it'll be one or the other for me b/c I'm headed to NW Ct for the weekend. I might just do Stafford on the way there. My wife'll get pissed at me if I spend the entire weekend racing.
