I got a Stages PM last week for my cross bike and it works great except for some reason it won't zero-calibrate from my 500 (which is on firmware v3.0, the latest is 3.3). The Garmin just waits forever on the "calibrating..." screen. I can calibrate my Quarq and Powertap from the Garmin, and I can calibrate the Stages PM with no problem using my iphone, so I have no idea what the problem is. I did do a factory reset on the 500 with no change. I guess I will try updating the firmware.

Sigh - two hours trying to get SRMmac and my PCV to talk w/ eachother... no dice.
I re-installed the USB-Serial driver, anything I'm missing here?
Training Peaks Device Agent can find the PCV and downloads files just fine, but Finder, Golden Cheetah, and SRMmac won't.

huh - I was thinking the older version of SRMMac would work with a PCV... Grumpy linked to a copy of the .dmg file a few posts up (today)
If not SRMMac, what is the name of the older version that will? I've got some settings I need to change that have to go through the software, no option for it on the headunit..
Specifically, I'm most interested in the "time-out" bit, a couple of times now, my headunit stops recording while we are at the rail (track racing) and since the head unit is out of sight (per UCI/USAC rules), I don't know till after the race that I didn't get any data. Thoughts?

oh yeah...if you are looking for an older version then maybe that will work. sorry, i'm not an expert on that. maybe grumpy will chime in on how he got it to work.
as far as your head unit stopping recording, what keeps it alive? if you press some buttons on it, will that work? if so, seems like you could reach back/under your saddle and prevent the issue. workaround, i know.

Had a similar problem with my PT before they fixed the firmware. The issue is whether will do anymore upgrades to the 500 firmware? I'm interested in the Stages, due to the cost, but not being able to calibrate puts a bit of a damper on that when using a 500.
I wonder if it calibrates with an 800?

Stages tech support has been responsive. They acknowledge that with the latest 500 firmware the Stages PM may take up to 3-4 minutes to calibrate (I had been giving up after a minute or two). They said that they will try to fix the problem with a Stages firmware update. (They make the units to order so they always ship with the latest firmware; updating firmware on an existing unit requires an iphone 4s or 5.) I'll report back if I hear anything more.

when i pre-ride calibrate my SRM on my garmin edge 500, it shows me a current calibration and a previous calibration. they're always different, sometimes very different (like 131 for current and 41 for previous, for example). does that mean anything?

Is there a huge temperature change between where your bike is stored and where you ride? Is the calibration change always the same direction? If it is in the same direction, and there is a temp change, then IMO you are likely okay. If not then, well, that is a huge shift. FWIW, my SRM stays around the 550 range, and the most I've seen the pre-ride calibration change is under 10 points. Usually it's 2 or 3. My bike is stored in (non HVAC) garage, and the temp when I ride is reasonably consistent (head in an oven hot).

^no temp change, bike is in attached but non hvac garage and i do the calibration procedure there as well. this time of year, it's a few degrees diff between garage and outside.
all i do is pedal forward to "wake it up", put the drive side crankarm at 6:00 position, go to the calibration screen on the garmin, and push calibrate. after it shows a #, i hit enter and the garmin continues looking for gps location while i start to ride and hit "start".
i'll start paying more attention to the numerical discrepancy (or lack thereof if applicable).

Here's something new:
I read ~50 pages of this and have no further questions (special thanks ovoleg for asking all the newb questions ). Going to do an FTP test this weekend; should be 'fun'.
First real training ride with power this morning. 8 x 5' intervals along a silky-smooth, newly paved Great Highway. I was keeping it around 90% of my max HR, so uncomfortable, but sustainable. Best 5' I got was 289w. We'll see what I can do in an all out 20' test. Goal = almost (but don't) puke.

Sounds great, make sure you understand the FTP protocol to get your best result. Try to find a road where you can stay under constant sustainable power.
