For intervals, I usually display 3 fields:
10s power
lap power
lap time
I try to make the power numbers equal my target power.
Sometimes I'll add a fourth field, usually HR or cadence, depending on if I'm concerned about those.

Thanks guys. I have a 500, so less screen estate, so I'm going to try putting a couple less things I think I'll use less frequently on a different screen, but I think I have a good place to start.

On screen 1 I have 3s power, 30s power, avg power, cadence.
Screen 2 is time, lap time, lap cadence, lap avg power, kJ.
Most of it is useless during a race, I'm all about post-ride analysis.
Two things I don't show on screen is speed and distance. In a race, it only matters that you're going at least as fast as everyone else, I figure.

So in road races you...pre-ride or drive the course until you know landmarks well? Just randomly choose tactics based on how long you think is left in the race? Just hang around until there's a 1k to go sign then start racing? I just can't imagine racing a road race w/o displaying distance to figure out if there's a climb coming up or how much race is left etc.

+1. I also use speed when it's my turn on the front in order to match speed at the transition.

And if you know the total length, and roughly how long it'll take, you can figure out if you're halfway done or whatever.
I guess for Cascade RR in 2013 I did have distance on so I knew where the feed zones/climbs were. But still, RRs where I really want distance happen about 4 times a year. (for me)

I got really technical and spent a day sorting out my display settings. I'm still modifying it but I have a training, information, racing, power, and climbing page.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing
For power I like having 3s and 30s fields as it gives a better picture of what you are actually doing (except for my climbing page I use 10s as the output is more constant).

My fields are super simple because my reading eyesight sucks.
For RRs:
3s power
total distance
For crits and cross races:
3s power
elapsed time
For training:
3s power
lap time
cadence
NP
TSS
For JRA:
3s power
time of day
heading
distance
elevation gain
I don't think I've ever wished I had speed displayed. The only time I'm even curious about speed is when I'm going far too fast to look at the garmin. And noplace around here is flat or consistent enough grade that matching speed when pulling through is useful.

Not that I can think of. Bethel is mostly not flat. At Rockleigh and Harlem you can kill yourself if you take your eyes off the road. I guess at the Sussex fairgrounds it might have been useful to have speed.
Maybe I'll add another field with 3s power, elapsed time, and speed, and see if I end up using it. But honestly, the times I've been in the break, there is a lot of concentration involved and I'm not thinking about the garmin at all. I guess I match pulls by feel, sort of aiming for just shy of where it feels like surging through, unless I'm dying, in which case, aiming for just shy of where I'm going to completely blow up.

My main screen that I usually always look at unless im doing intervals
3s power
Time
Cadence|HR
Power Zone|%FTP
The other 2 with power metrics I can't think of the exact layout..will take a look later when I get home

Yes, actually, but I also really enjoy exploring on the road. I find the compass heading* to be very useful when exploring new territory, whether on the trail or the road. We have a lot of topography here and things are highly nonrectilinear.
* heading as in N, NE, E, etc, not like the declination of the north pole or whatever.

Dear WKO+ v3.0 users:
1) How do I compute TSS using HR, and how do I enter that data into WKO+ to capture the training stress?
2) How do I merge two rides in WKO+? A few weeks back, I spent ~30min at a bike shop in the middle of a long ride. I would like to merge my endurance riding before and after, which is currently stored in WKO+ as two separate files.

2 is a mass pita and I don't think you can do it in WKO. Last time I had this issue with my .fit files I used some sketchy tool off the net and then sent it to WKO.
