seems that Pioneer actually launched a well tested product as opposed to a beta ware. I'm not sure about their slope stability, but it sure seems like the unit is solid

right, but the point of my comment was that the guys w/ Pioneers don't feel the same way about the Pioneer units vs plenty of the other units they've had over the years.
I can name two who DIDN'T sell their Pioneer units.

Anyhow -

anyone hear the new price/info drop from Pioneer today? I expect that if/when I get back into road racing, I'll be shipping my existing 6800 crankset in to them.

I like the BB30 concept but honestly it's a pain. The Shimano BB seems simple, as does GXP etc, but the current Shimano crank/rings have been lauded as the best. With that the Pioneer looks like a really appealing crank based power system for someone with Ultegra or DA cranks. $1k for anyone that doesn't want to Google, and that's for both sides but no computer/head.

Threaded BB's are great as long as you keep them pristine. It's not hard to do that, but you'd be surprised how many have been buggered up. BB30 was created to a) reduce manufacturing costs and b) stiffen the BB spindle. When executed and maintained properly, they work really well. Both of my bikes, one mid range, the other high end, have BB30 and they work as designed. BB30 is all about execution.

It's all about tolerances, and many brands don't have great tolerances.

I don't own a bike from any of those brands, so all my press-fit BBs have adaptors to make them threaded - no problems with the new situation!

I have two aluminum bikes with BB30, and neither has given me problems. My only carbon bike has a threaded BB.

As a guy who fights the cost/reliability battle for consumer goods for my day job, I feel like I should point out threads are more expensive than bores. Seems like some companies don't bother to gauge their bb30 bikes though, so the failure mode gets kicked down the road to the consumer. External threads that wreck a frame if they're messed up would be a warranty/manufacturing spend situation I'd be trying to get out of as a bike manufacturer for sure. Lots of money potentially for something awfully easy to screw up.

Pioneer's "u-supply crank" link says $999 here:

Article that I read is here:
Pioneer brings dual sided, crank-based power meters to just $999

My Cannondale System Six was rock solid. The 675g total weight SRM crankset+computer was a nice benefit of the BB30 (my previous Campy alum arms + English BB was like 950g and no power meter).

The Tsunamis I invested in a $200? I forget the wholesale price BB30 reamer. With that it got better, with the green loctite (get the stuff for putting sleeves in engine blocks).

FOr ease of use I'd want English threads, a BB reamer tool with the English cutting tool, and that would make things simple. Installing the BB/crank on the track bike (happens to be Italian but it's threaded) was so simply I stopped by the LBS on the way to the track, picked up the GXP crank/BB, installed there on the shop floor, and went and raced the bike.

However now that I've committed to BB30 I think the reamer handle set (the shop had me pay their cost for the blade, they use their own reamer handles, and charged me way too little for labor) would set me up fine. Then I could do my own BB installs/checks/etc.

why don't more people use 4iii? only $500, easy to install, easy to transfer between bikes. The only draw back is that it assumes the same effort on the drive side, but it should be pretty close.

Bike Radar had slope issues with the first gen unit they tested. 2nd gen was fine during the test period.

Where a lot of the offerings have fallen down is with longevity and long term accuracy. Or just accuracy. Right now I am looking at a pile of data from one of the "new affordable +/- like an SRM" brands. Two identical setups that can't seem to find their way within 10% of one another.

My Stages is giving me more trouble than it's worth, minor stuff, but I'm a set it and forget it kind of guy. I love the idea of the Pioneer, but I'm afraid on the durability side. I think I'll ultimately go SRM, but I'm terrified that the market is finally actually going to force them to drop the price, even modestly, in the next few months (i.e. the day after I buy one).

I've been using Golden Cheetah for analysis. I started looking at cycling analytics, debating making the switch. Someone convince me to drop $80 on cycling analytics.
FWIW, I do like GC but a cleaner looking interface would be nice.

you can mess around with cycling analytics at home, on someone else's computer on the road, and at work. At work.

what else do you need?

And CA has a trial so that one can do their own due diligence and see how it compares to whatever. I think all my competitors should use GC.

Once you understand Flexicharts, there are very few limits to Cycling Analytics. Flexicharts is the application command line interface, which allows you to look up data in various charts.

I just wish CA had ability to auto-sync from Garmin Connect. That's pretty much the only reason I'm using Training Peaks instead of CA.
