First cat 3 race today, the Capitol Crit in Olympia, right in front of the dome no less. Sunny, nice temps, yet the turnout was super low... 15 people in the 3's?!

I was hoping to see more like 50+, or 80+ as the bigger crits are around here, but no dice. It's only an hour away from Seattle, guess everyone's burned out or something..

I was without team mates, and there were 5 or so of one team, 4 of another, and 3 of another.. goal was just to hang on and see if I can survive for 50 minutes (was supposed to be 60) instead of 30-35. Answer is yes.

One guy got off the front from the start, and I figured it was doomed anyway. Then 2-3 more joined, and before long it was 5 up the front with 20 seconds on us.. halfway through the race they had 40 seconds on us, complete with team mates blocking. Though I didn't know who was blocking or who was up the road, a confusing feeling.

For some reason I was at 180-190 bpm for just about the whole race, guess there's just not as many places to hide from the wind in a pack of 10 or less. (a few got popped)

Towards the end the announcer was said stuff like, "If these guys don't start chasing harder we might have to pull them.." which seemed weird but when 1/3rd of the race is up the road perhaps that's an option.. they didn't pull us though.

Coming out of the final turn we're sprinting for 6th place up a 3% hill, and I knew I needed to gear down a little and hope to pass a guy or two that was overgeared... I did just that and passed a guy in the sprint, though he decided to drift right and hit my frame (or something) with his front wheel, not 20-30m from the line.. cringed a little and thought I was gonna hear that sound behind me, but he just squawked and kept it upright.

After the race dude was all, "blah blah blah" and I just told him, "hey file a complaint with the officials, I was going straight, you came into me".. I don't get how he thought I was doing anything wrong by going straight, but things are blurry in the final 50m and **** happens. I'm guessing he just had his head down and wasn't paying attention or something.

Came in 3rd for the 'field' sprint, 8th overall. Hello Cat 3.

Hong Kong Championship Road Race
6am, Sunday 27 June

It wasn’t looking good when all of Saturday was covered by a ‘Thunderstorm Warning “ from the Hong Kong Observatory. This had caused the cancellation of many events including the championship individual time trial. A few of the guys were talking about not racing at the road event, but many of us were hoping on an improved forecast in the morning.

Cue the 4am alarm and the 4.30am team van from my end of Hong Kong to the rather remote (well, let’s just say “close to mainland China”) Brides Pool Road course.

I’m the only guy in the van – a few guys have decided to sleep in.

Roads are wet, but it isn’t raining much or at all. The event might not be so bad. Another good sign is the eight guys all waiting with their bikes at the team tent. The ‘captain’ wasn’t racing, but he was playing water boy etc. We have some good riders, so the plan is for the 3-4 good guys to all work and try to protect our one star rider. If we can keep him in the front pack until the end of lap 5 or so, he’ll do the rest. I’m starting in the back with the ‘here for the experience’ group (now down to 2 due to no-shows). My plan is to find a small group the right pace for me and try to survive as many laps as I can before being lapped – which is going to happen, it’s just a matter how soon.

It hits 6am and it looks like the mass start isn’t going to be so massive. We are not ready to go until 6.15 and the rain has become steady. The organisers decide to shorten the race by one lap of the course (15km of road, two 180deg turns), so we are now doing 7 instead of 8 – 105km instead of 120. Lapped riders must pull out.

We’re off. A big bunch stays together for the first couple of km, before the first slight descent thins it out a bit. Roads are very wet, so it is a case of experience and balls leading the way. Next 3-4 km are rolling country, so the top end of the field accelerate and build a gap. I find myself in that nice group I was hoping for. I do some work, I sit back, I try not to get too much grit in my teeth from the wheel spray. All my 'slower' team mates are in bed, so I am on my own.

My group is thinned down to about 10 riders on the larger descent before the turn. You can just see the nervous riding – tension in the arms and bodies, twitchy movements on bikes. I find a bit of room and hope no one (including me!) slides out. We take the turn together and work out towards the climb.

Here’s where it gets hard – climbing with the group. I’m with them for the first steep part, then stay on comfortably on the flatter section. The second rise is too much though and I fall off the back. Crap! I pass the start/finish line in a group of one, but I’m hoping to catch a few lads on the second half of the course and the descent/climb there.

Although there was some ‘puckering’, I manage not to drop the bike on a big sweeping corner (Garmin says 58km/h!) and I realise that I’m not far from the second turn when the lead motorbike flies past on the other side of the road. One guy has made a break for it and has a big gap on the next riders. The pack has about 15 guys in it – 5 from my team. Go Boys! Through the turn I am still riding solo, but the groups are thinning out and I’m only 10-15seconds back on the riders I started with and I have a good ride to the start/finish line.

One lap down, but things are getting bad. The rain is hammering down. Visibility is not great – glasses on, glasses off, glasses foggy, glasses half down so you can look over the top – arrrrgh! The wind and speed on the descents is hammering the droplets into your face. The water is thick in places as it sheets across the road. The racing line is often close to the centre line of the road where the gutter is full. My shoes are saturated already, but are worse after I misjudge the depth of one area and pretty much ‘walk on water’ as I pedal through.

At the next turn I see that the leader is still out, but our guys are doing fine in a second group.

I’m still riding solo and I have a feeling that I’m never going to catch anyone. As I pass the start/finish area it is clear that plenty of people are pulling out.

* skipping past a lot of boring and soggy riding, no need to tell you about wild dogs trotting down the centre line or the cattle grazing unfenced by the side of the road *

The rain is not letting up and the deep puddles are getting deeper and the racing line is looking really strange in places. I’m climbing and the fast pack of the elite juniors heads past heading the other way – but they are practically on my side of the road. I hit the big puddle again and although I’m only half a metre from the centreline I’m sure that my feet are completely underwater – that has got to be 20cm or more – and that slows me down for a couple of seconds. The juniors don’t seem to be having fun and I can’t imagine what the small wheel bike guys are making of it. At least they are only doing 3 laps!

I survive my second lap, so I’m 30km into the race. However, I know that the lead riders are going to catch me soon, so I’m hoping to finish lap 3 before that happens

2.5 laps – there goes the lead motorcycle. Bugger it.

The one guy is still out there in his one-man break. Then 30secs further back are two guys, then another 15 back to a group of 5 with our ‘star’ in it. The next few riders are in dribs and drabs, but it good to see 5 of our guys still in the top 15.

I approach the start/finish and pull out. It’s still raining hard and there are plenty of people hiding in tents who have decided to call it a day or who were lapped sooner than I was.

After 5 laps our star rider, Colin, turns up at the tent. He’s pulled out and says that there is no need to kill yourself for a race you cannot win. Conditions are getting worse, the lead guys are taking way too many risks, the group of 5 he was with were not willing to do any work. We still have 4 guys on the course, but back in the top 15-20 or so.

Colin then lightens up the moment by telling us about the last time he passed the big puddle near the first turn.

A couple of juniors are ahead and are staying over to the side of the course because the lead motorbike has passed them. These are the really small kids – probably 15-16 years old, but the Chinese lads can look about 10-12. Colin sees them ride into the puddle, about mid way across the lane. They get deeper and deeper until they actually start to disappear. The water is about 60cm deep! By the time the fast men are passing, the kids have lost all forward momentum and one just falls sideways with a splash and is completely gone. The adults all laugh as the kids ‘pops up’ with a gasp! This might have been what prompted Colin to withdraw, or it could have been the fact he was half way into the on coming lane at the time (he also mentions the first few serious falls...).

The race ends with the solo break away winning (he’s just ‘retired’ from the national team…) and with our 4 remaining guys back in the top 20. No results yet as everything was wet and we all ran home.

Lots of fun, but might have been better in the dry.
Picture 5..jpg
I attach the rainfall map for the first hour of the event. The course is pretty much in the middle of that yellow band of colour. You can read the scale for yourself.

I'll post back later if there are any good photos of the submarine action. Give the local teams a day or two and facebook and flickr will be alive with classic shots.

Matt your 4 races weren't 50 minutes?

I did one cat 5 crit that was 25 min in PA since then all of them have been (in NJ) 45-60min ish 4/5 races, but it seems like other areas are more 35-45.

Not usually - we've done one 45 minute crit this year in the 4's but besides that they usually have the 4/5's for 35 minutes or less, and the 3's do 60 minutes.

How long are 3's crits in Jersey?

I guess the 3s are about 55-65 min or hair over, it is normally done by miles and the 4/5s go slow thus taking more time per mile than the higher guys. 20-24 miles for 4/5s is normal which puts us in the 45-60 range and 3s alone are 27 miles, but we don't have many 3 only fields (in the south where there isn't a ton of racing) so 1/2/3 is like 34 miles

example:
22 laps on 1.1 miles for the 4/5s
https://www.bikereg.com/events/regist...?eventid=11186

ironically the same guys have a crit the day before that is shorter so go figure.

Do you get stage race upgrade points in the 4's? I can't remember. If so, you might be a 3...

Even so, it's only a matter of time for badhat, he's at the pointy end of the races, and just needs a few more tries for everything to click it seems.

no and whats worse the field for the RR where there were ACA points was just shy of 5o which means points only went 7 deep so i dont even get any upgrade points for the RR.

i will however get a bump to 3rd on Best All Around rider, which i think i can keep a lock on for the rest of the season, which is also good for a cat up at theend of the year.

i really want onto a team that shows up for races and works like a team. i have a ton to offer in terms of chasing breaks and setting tempo and working for a captain.

Primal sent like 7-8 4s to dead dog this weekend and they totally ran the show. controlled and owned the crit in a way i havent seen before in a cat4 crit. very smooth, very coordinated. hats off to em.

I crashed into a ditch 4km into the race today, and I was in the top 15 guys!

Seriously, who the hell crashes into a ditch!? Oh yeah, this guy.

I need a change of luck... bad...

a couple of reflection on the weekend:

1) havent seen the GC times yet but theres a good chance that 11 sec i earned yesterday with my 1K attack kept me in 8th place. granted its just 8th vs 9th, but in principle, thats very satisfying. i was really excited to try a 1K, cuz it plays to my strength and seems like a good way for me to win when its coming down to a group finish.

2: i am looking forward to a stage race without a monster climb in the middle. i lost 3 minutes yesterday to the top 7 guys and made up a minute or two today on several of them at the TT, cant wait for a race where the climbing seperation isnt so severe, or barring that another omnium where the gaps dont matter. in anycase, i think stage racing suits me, minus the big damn 10 mile climb in the middle. (next spring i work on power to weight)

3: crits are a lot of fun when your plan is to sit in rather than win.

edit: theyre fun anyway obv, but when youre starting off anxious about a result and positioning, its a little nerve wracking, as opposed to just trying to keep from getting gapped and enjoying the ride.

Boston Harbor Circuit Race Cat 3. 6-mile loop on beautiful WA backroads near Olympia. Better turnout than yesterday, at least 50 or so.

Sat in the pack and enjoyed the scenery, made sure to stay in the top half of the pack, blocked a little when a team mate when up the road, and was behind a nasty crash in the last 200m sprint.. got around it for a top 20 I think, not sure, and it doesn't really matter. It was fun.

Finally a good result this morning!

Fitness Park Cat 5 Crit: Awesome course but much more wobbily riders than usual. Did well to stay at the front and closed a bunch of gaps. I had planned to attack with 4 to go but didn't have the legs or the position. Pulled back an attack at 3 to go and looking back I should have countered here. Oh well, crossed the line safely in 11th out of 26th for my best race of the season/career.

Reston Town Center GP cat 4

Had a strong race. Instigated a break right after the first prime lap. Went solo for a lap before getting joined by a few others. We had a decent gap and I feel like it had potential. That is until my only teammate there chased us down and dragged the whole pack with him. Then he dropped out of the race a lap later. Thanks buddy. The announcer even called him out for it. Spent the latter half of the race doing more work at the front. Ended up 5th. Apparently I also won a prime cause they gave me a bunch of schwag when I went to pick up my prize money.

I need a new team.

Had a decent finish in yesterday's 3 Villages Road Race in Baltic CT (write-up here), but once again I wasn't able to crack the top ten (I learned today that I finished 11th in the Cat 4 field). I normally stink at crits, so I had several Ten Penny Ales last night as I didn't really care much how fresh and rested I felt for today's Cat 4 Keith Berger Crit (write-up here). So it came as a complete surprise when I snagged my first ever race-day winnings for taking first in the merchandise prime. I can't wait to wake up tomorrow and test the Wooden Bike Coffee I earned today...

Wait, are you the team with the pink kit? If so I completely agree, I couldn't believe the guy was towing everyone up to you; and with the announcer yelling at him for it the whole time.
