Wireless Computers

How well do these things work? Will the signal get mixed up with a racer near me? Will the signal get to my computer 100% of the time? Is it really that much of a weight saving? Are they worth it money wise?

Unfortunately, the answer to all of those questions is yes and no, except the weight savings, which might be all of about 0.1micro-grams!

No matter how discrete they make the computer signals, there is always the possibility of interferrence, from other wireless computers, cell-phones, pagers, garage door openers, taxi-cab radios, ad infinitum.

I think that most models work very well.

Give me a wire any day. Only one battery to deal with (most cases) no interference and the ability to laugh at people when they ask how fast we're going when their wireless rig futzes out.

I have noticed that cell phone towers will mess up if not fry wireless systems. Also those Apache helo's with their over the horizon radar messes up a wireless system. I had a phone ring at the shop one day and because of it my Breezer was suddenly doing 95mph standing still. I run one on that bike just because I am a shop owner, and the store cat chewed the wire off the first one. Other than that I run wires.

When your HRM reads 320bpm, it's time to ditch the wireless computer. That's what did it for me.

I've been running a Cateye wireless for awhile now and happily can say I've had none of the above problems.

I don't ride in groups very often though so my experience may not be conclusive. However, other than my 2 year old pulling on my wheel magnet before a ride once the computer has been flawless.
