48 miles today...longest ride in over 3 weeks..not good, but it's a long season.

the first 25 miles were climbing, I am out in the desert in Antelope Valley training with the Nav, so it's up hill everyway out of here. On the way back I had sweet 20mph head wind so it was a very rough 48 miles...

Redlands is this weekend, it's gonna hurt A LOT.

There is an 8 mile 2300ft climb here where I raced a friend up it. I thought he was a little bit stronger than I, but I wasn't going to let him get away. 30' later I set a pr on that hill that I haven't been within 4' of ever again. An equally matched or ever-so-slightly stronger training partner is invaluable.

Been getting up at 5AM to ride in the mornings, getting myself used to it. It's great, being done with a ride for the day at 7AM. Not sure I'm getting the most effort wrung out myself that early but I'll get there. Tomorrow afternoon I have some hill intervals planned.

Was late for my ride so I spent the first 15 minutes bridging up superthreshold. Then it was just a shtishow from there in.

Ze Canon intervals

https://connect.garmin.com/activity/76062352

Interval Averages = 320, 314, 311, 319, 320, 316

First time doing these since I upped my FTP. Hurt really good.

1. 2*20min TH intervals, avgs for both exceeded FTP (perhaps its time to re-test?); followed by 20 min big gear tempo.
2. Body Pump class in the evening (grueling).

Took Sunday off after Saturday's Race...so I decided to torture myself yesterday with two rides..the first being a short climbing workout, the second started with a climb, then rollers for the first thirty (with one small climb), then the fun began with climb repeats every 8 miles or so, with a cooker at the end to finish it off...today..90 minute recovery ride.

Yesterday's stats - Combined (Bigger ride was 76 miles, elevation map below)

Time 05:21:47
Miles 92.47
Elevation Climb 6966
Speed -- 18.8 44.2
Cadence -- 82 127

Did some TT practice at Fiesta Island today. Forgot how bad headwinds are, and I imagine these weren't even that bad...

ridethecliche should be proud of me, took yesterday off, and am doing the same today. Almost feels worse today, but I think it's because swelling is going down.

Looks like I may be missing riding the Ronde Van Vlaanderen this weekend...

edit: Another thing is that as the swelling goes down, the pain is migrating south to the lower inside of the knee, which is nice as that means this is more than likely tendonitis rather than chondromalacia.

Two hours of not too hard, not too easy and I feel much better. I sent my coach a note to let her know that I don't hate her anymore.

alright, heres a "what would you do" question:

i'm in a rest week before going into a peak/race phase that starts this weekend with a pair of crits.

so far all i've done this week is my bike to bus commute (about 8 miles round trip each day) and i plan to get in one workout tonight and one short hard workout friday afternoon to get a little primed for the weekend.

heres the WWYD part:

for tonights workout would you do

a) solo intervals of some sort
b) moderate trainnig ride where i can sit in or work a little bit depending on how i feel (this is where my cat3 teammates will probably be)
c) HARD training ride, which will amount to 90 minutes of over/under, sometimes WAAAAY over, and possibly some extra climbing at the end
or d) solo tempo/base...

Yeah, I'm hoping that I can just take the majority of the week off and chalk it up to a mini vacation of sorts. At least that way, I'll be nearly back to 100% 2 weeks thence.

The alternative is too meh to think about.

I'm bored at work, so will respond, but this is coming from a Cat 5 racer, so take it for what its worth (probably nothing) . But, I've always heard/read that its best to do a ride on Wednesday that best simulates Saturday's race (intensity & duration). So, probably "A" with the idea of simulating Saturday's Crit - Over/Unders maybe?

I'd do intervals, but just do one more than half of the usual number to keep intensity volume down.

Its a rest week. If you believe in them, you need to keep the length and intensity down. I would do anything but c. Solo intervals can be managed. The moderate training ride, you can manage your intensity there too by sitting in or working on the way out or the way back, and resisting the temptation to ride hard. Tempo/base is also good, just keep the tempo minimal. If it were me, I would do b as the social aspect is good for the brain. Let your teammates know that you're not going hard.

its probably worth calrifying what my normal load is, as i'd think that would influence the decision.

usually in build this time of year i'd be doing a hard tuesday (either race sim or intervals) hard ride wednesday, and tempo/sst thursday

so from both a volume and intesity perspective, taking the tuesday and thursday off is still a significant reduction in volume and intensity even if i do the hard wednesday ride.

i am currently inclined towards the teammate ride, as it gives me some flexibility, wont burn me out as much, and as suggested, its a good social opportunity.
