monsters of the midway
I was in the cat 4 5 race this weekend. I think every race had a wreck involved. The one that happened in front of me broke me from the pack. Just tt'ed till the end of the race. Is all this really worth the risk? I'd like you guys to talk me into continuing racing... This weekend was a big turnoff.

In any sport there are injuries. That being said, when I went into the hospital they told me cyclists were one of the most common sport injured patients. I've 19 but I've had a few injuries on and off the bike that make crits very unappealing to me now. RRs, TTs and Tris have crashes too, but they're less frequent. Never feel pressure to ride. I've found TT's and triathlons extremely rewarding and much safer. Races around here it's easy get away from the pack before the finish which is one of the most dangerous parts.

In most types of competition, there is a risk of injury. This is also true in every race and training ride. It sucks, but it's your choice to decide to continue or not.
I was carted off in an ambulance earlier this year in a crit due to a crash in front of me (dude heard the final lap bell, thought it was the end of the race and jumped into my teammate who was bringing me to the front). I was pretty soured on crits for the couple of weeks I couldn't race. The next race I did had a crit as the final stage. It was the most fun race I'd done to date. As you said, bad things can happen in any race. You have to decide if you want to continue racing and take that risk, and then figure out how to mitigate the risk as much as possible.

I think he's saying that asking to be convinced to race is fodder for the 41. Speaking only for myself, I couldn't care any less if guys I don't know race or not. Quit the sport. Do it.
