Aww, man. Heal up.
Bicycle Outfitter in Los Altos or Veloro in RWC both have great wheelbuilders.

Bummer about a crash. Hopefully no concussion. Yep, really like the outfitter. Too bad they are kind of out of the way for me.
I did 2Wheel CAT4. It was a mix of good and bad. Overall pace was mellow. Going in to a last lap through checkane, everyone gets bunched up. Guy on my left start bouncing off me, then goes down hard. I get tossed around a bit, but manage to keep it upright. Catch up to the field, somewhat shooked up. Tried to gain few positions, and surf through the middle with various success. Didn't get quite where I wanted. Final sprint I didn't even get out of the saddle, was trying to navigate around people. Got 8th. bleh. After the race someone commented that I was a good wheel to follow through the corners. I don't think I was aggressive enough, but after barely avoiding that crash.... Anyway. Will post a video of last lap, including a crash, in the video thread later today.

bob beal memorial p123 - 10/25.
small field and a lot of guys were doubling up so it was a much weaker field than the other p123 races I've done. had 2 other teammates in the race. was really active the first 1/3 of the race covering pretty much everything I could. was in a few moves, but everything got brought back. "the" move went when i was at the back recovering, which is a bummer, but, my teammate was in it which wasn't a bummer. I spent the rest of the race covering people who were trying to bridge, etc. With 2.5 laps to go a really strong guy jumped so I jumped on his wheel. a group of 4 of us got a gap. I knew we weren't going to catch the break so I helped work in the move and came across the line 10th (3/4 in the group I was in, lost the wheel of the first two coming out of the last corner. the "pack," or what was left of it, was about 10 feet short of catching me). teammate was 4th.
anyway, solid day, felt strong, and had fun. probably my best result this season, so i'm happy.

Raced twice yesterday at Red Kite No.5. My buddy was leading the overall series in the 35+ 3/4 category, mostly by himself. I came down to ride for him and was his only teammate. Sat near the front, marked his two nearest competitors, made sure no dangerous breaks formed. On the last lap he asked me to deliver him to the front and then ramp up the speed as high as possible for as long as possible to protect him from getting swarmed. He got fifth, which was good enough to extend his lead and he's a near lock now. I was pretty pleased. In two weeks, I want to bring a couple more teammates so we can put together a proper lead out and take the other teams' sprinters out of the equation.
Oh, then I did the M123 race purely for fitness. Pack finish after doing all that work in the prior race = personal win.

Matt, oof, get better quick.
Did Wells Ave this morning. They combined the A and B race, which turned out to be a miscalculation as we ended up with a massive field of maybe 75. Adam Myerson and a whole bunch of other fast guys showed up, so it was pretty spicy. I really went into the race specifically meaning to use it for training, to get plenty of tempo, threshold and super threshold work in, but I couldn't help but play around in the front from time to time when circumstances permitted. At one point I was in a short-lived break with dnuzzo, but of course they rang the bell for a prime as we went across the line. Dan told me to go for it and I put my head down, but I still swallowed and slid back, back, back (my legs aren't too good right now). I finally latched on a good 3/4 of the way back, half a lap after being caught coincidentally just in front of Myerson who was having a chat with someone. Which I then heard him interrupt to say "I'm going to go for this one bro" or something like that. I was still struggling to recover, mind screaming "No, no, no, not now!" But off he went to the front. The next few laps sucked a lot.
Anyway, I was hanging tough and moving well in a sketchy group, but with 8 laps to go or so, the guy who calls the primes thought it would be oh-so-hilarious to call 4 in a row. Those surges pretty much did me in, I survived those laps but then came unhooked with 3 to go, blew up and came in pretty much DFL. I hate being out of form, but it is a training race, after all.

Sorry we had to leave before you guys finished. I wanted to congratulate you properly on your job and also cheer you on. I saw you making some moves early on before we left.
M35 version of that race:
I showed up having lasted 9 minutes in the race last Saturday and then being sick for most of the week (and taking care of Junior and my dad for 3.5 days). I came to the race expecting to last 10 minutes (it's flatter than Saturday's course), and then the boys convinced me to do the M35+ instead of the M45+ race (which should have been much easier).
A moderate field, 45-50 started, with our team Expo strongly represented. We had two very good potential winners (Dave and Todd), one wild card (Stan), and me and Chris doing domestique duties. Chris and I patrolled the front while D, T, and S attacked. Eventually all three of them made the winning break, leaving Chris and I to cover moves (Chris more than me as I was getting a bit cooked).
Dave won the race so that worked out.
Our own Shovel, doing his second race of the day, found me at 2 to go, I got on his wheel, and he made his way to the front, let me fight a bit for position when the swarm went on the wrong side just before the bell, found me again, and then drilled it going into the final corner. Guys were fighting for his wheel, guys were fighting for my wheel, those last two laps were great, so much fun, lots of close quarter racing, lots of very subtle moves to hang onto Shovel's wheel (hanging onto a wheel is infinitely more difficult than taking one). I ended up jumping first and it seemed like not too many other guys sprinted.
The bonus is that I saw a "2nd fastest time on the Ninigret Finish Sprint" segment in Strava, 14 seconds. I looked to see what my fastest time was - 12 seconds. 4th on the leaderboard (well there's a bunch of 12 seconds but only three 11 second times). The 12 seconds was from last year's M40+ race at Ninigret where I sprinted across a gap and through some guys. I didn't think I did a great sprint that day but it was 41.7 mph on Strava.
Today's was pretty pitiful, no 40 mph or anything, I was overgeared when I jumped and yet I insisted on shifting up. Since I was pretty clear I eased and started soft pedaling before the line. I haven't finished too many races this year and I haven't done a single real sprint in a race this year. I made so many mistakes it was terrible. Ultimately I had a great time working with my teammates and then fighting out the honor sprint in the field with Shovel.

A weekend of meh
Red Kite
35+3/4 - I knew who was gonna win the race (and he did). And I made sure I was on his wheel with 2 laps to go and stuck there. And I was there with 1/2 a lap to go. And when the surge went, there was nothing there. My legs were dead. It was like driving with a e-brake on. That's never happened before ever. I cleared my flank and swung out of the race because my engine was on fire. Also on fire - my streak of 5 straight top 10s
35+123 - I was kinda nervous about actually finishing considering what had just happened. But I felt somewhat better. First of all two guys basically took off on the 2nd or 3rd lap and rode away on their own personal TTT for 60 minutes. Their teams did a good job of not letting anything get away too far. Those two won the race and everyone else was basically playing their own game. I got into an early secondary break that fell apart quickly. Then I tried to jump to another secondary break that actually stayed away until 2 or 3 laps to go, a really strong guy from the Safeway team went with me, but we couldn't get all the way across. I think we were almost 2/3rds at one point. I was able to some how recover and still finish upper pack. I felt like I belonged there.
Two Wheel Crit
35+3/4
4th
Dead legs again. Small field. About the most unsatisfying top 5 ever consider there was only 10 in my race. I did get prizes and cash...but still. I almost took out a guy I knew drifting off my line on the final lap. And I was generally sketchy throughout that entire race. Not my finest hour.
Last week I did Dunningan (90 miles), the suisun crit. then 3 hard days of training and bike commuting the other two days. That may have been too much. I think i need to take it easy this week.
Of other note - I drove off without my front wheel (reynolds 66 tubular!) from the red kite and didnt realize it till i got home. i got back into traffic and thank god someone turned it in. also mattm- not a good couple weeks for your wheels

Red Kite Crit #5 , 2/3's. 41st. Crashed. Hard.
In racing there are ups, and downs. Well I found a new low yesterday in this race!
First off I missed the break - took a gamble and decided not to go for breaks this time around, since so far in this series they never stuck. Of course this time it stuck.
On the last corner of the race, I'm on the outside and a guy struck a pedal or something, and started to swing wide, pushing me wide. This was about mid-turn, so it pushed me so far wide I ended up clipping a bush on the exit of the turn, and going over the bars, doing a ****ing front flip. Ugh.
Landed on my head, helmet cracked!! I guess that's what they're for. Bike is mostly ok, rear wheel a bit untrue. Hip is sore, back is scratched up, but I came out more or less ok.
Still holding on to 3rd overall in the omnium, so at least yesterday wasn't a total disaster.

Thanks. Nothing major, mostly a sore hip, buncha scratches on my back. Been icing the hip a lot, but am generally mobile and ready to get back on the bike. New helmet ordered (Lazer Genesis)
Mostly bummed that I a) missed the winning break and b) crashed out while sprinting for 10th place.. so it's the ego that took the biggest hit! =]

Mike, you looked great out there. Definitely one of the players. I had to leave just when you got the 4 up break going. I am happy to hear that it stuck. You deserved it.
CDR, after my frustrating championship race I did the M35+ for training and fun. If only that Mystic guy would have worked with me instead of attacking me during the bridge we would have made it to the front group. So at that point I figured I'd make a payment for all of the great things you do for this stupid sport. You were one of the first to help convince me to return to racing. So giving you all I had left for a lead out was an honor and a pleasure. You had only one real chaser but be was battling. Fun to watch from behind. I ended up top 20 or so.

I was wondering if anyone else sprinted and I was going to ask you offline. I felt kind of guilty afterward because it seemed that no one sprinted, even though the battle for position got kind of heated.
Also you give me way too much credit. I'm glad that you're back in the sport, that's for sure.

Sounds like a lot of good racing from a lot of guys this weekend. Muy Bueno!
My racing this weekend was a mixed bag:
Saturday night, Edwardsville P/1/2. Big money brought a lot of big guns to Saturday night's race. Jelly Belly, Texas Roadhouse, Bissell Nuvo, Predator, Panther and Chipotle all had guys there. This is a 7 corner crit with a loooong back stretch into a headwind. Pack was strung out the entire time. I found myself too far back where gaps were forming all over and I eventually cracked.
Belleville P/1/2. Taking a lesson away from the night before I paid close attention to position, never letting myself get too far back in the pack. Brad Huff got a gap going for a prime and stuck it for the win. A teammate told me to move up with 1/2 lap to go, so I surfed the gutter to 5th wheel. Came into last turn sitting 3rd wheel but had a few guys come around me during the sprint. I took 9th. I'll take it, considering the level of competition this weekend.

yeah i was just frustrated by the 1st 35+3/4 race. i had been right outside a top 3 the last five weeks - either went too soon or left it too late, or following the wrong wheel. But i was 4th or 5th wheel and right on the wheel of the winner. everything perfect finally and my legs just were not there. but getting the wheel back was huge.

Absolutely. I'm doing the M55+ early then the M45+ at 12:30. I'll have to leave shortly afterwards. The course fits your strengths and style very well, but you'll be racing in a national class Cat2/3 field that pays big and deep.

I would love to do well there and I seem to be on form right now, but not being familiar with the course and knowing the field will be strong, there are no expectations.
I'll say hi if I'm there earlier enough to see you.

SJBC Twilight Crit, A's. Won it again.
Only 12 laps/24 miles this week, so it seemed short. Larger field, but no heavy hitters. I guess I'm considered a "heavy hitter" there now lol.
Parts of me were a bit sore, getting on the bike the first time after Saturday's doozy of a crash, but I soon forgot all about that and felt normal. Went with the usual moves on the climb, and into the headwind, but as usual didn't do too much work to save up for the sprint.
Pack stayed together this time, I was 3rd wheel on the finish straight, maybe 500m to the line? On TT-champ's wheel, and he led me out like a champ and dropped me off at the bottom of the 3-5% hill. (finish was near the top this week). I sprinted for what felt like FOREVER (about 30 seconds, maybe more), in 53x11, and slowed considerably but nobody came around.
Win, crash, win - all in a week's time. It's just how I roll.
