Thanks dudes. Now if I can just put this together this weekend in the 2/3's crit..
Baby steps I guess. (win sprints in hammer/sketchfest group rides -> win sprint in training race -> win sprint in real 2/3's race this weekend -> win sprint in 1/2's race eventually -> profit)

Congrats. Wait you said SJBC training crit? Is that the one that shows up on NCNCA, it says it's in Santa Rosa?

SJBC Tuesday Night Twilight Crit series, A group.
WIN.
!!!!! finally, a win this season - even if it's a unofficial crit with no cat 1's, I'll take it.
The big dogs (for this race) were mostly there, including mister 56x11 TT-champ guy, and some new TT-champ guy I was told to watch out for. Good thing this wasn't a TT.
It was windy on the backstretch, tailwind on the home stretch. Finish was halfway up the ~30s climb this time around, a finish that suited me. Went with all the right moves, and made sure not to do too much work in them since I was ok with it coming back for a field sprint.
With three laps to go, a group of 8 of us got away, and stayed away. With half-lap to go, guys are looking around, begin cat-n-mouse games. Love those games!
On the final straight (about 400m to the line), I'm 4th wheel, feeling antsy. I do a fake-jump to the left, about 80%, hopefully to trick someone into really going and towing me to the line. Instead they just attach to my wheel. Without about 200m to go, I'm leading out our sprint and nobody's coming around so I shrug and just go for it.
Held them off, won by a few bike lengths!

Bear Creek Crit Wed. Series, 4/5 - crash
Thought this would be a good chance to pop my race report cherry. 30 min, 1km loop in Houston park. Last week (mid pack finish) was first race for me. yesterday, 33 starters, hung in front end of group for most of day. Thunderstorm started 15 minutes in, resulting in the only technical turn getting pretty sketchy. Final lap, two man breakaway going to finish before we catch. Thinking a top 5 finish would be a good result. Move to 3rd position to start final lap. Hit technical corner (500m to go) a little faster due to it being the final lap, guy in front of me washes out, I collide with him and go down. Manage to get up and finish.
Minimal damage done, but still sucks. Hoping for a dry race next week and a decent result!

Hey, I was at Bear Creek crit too. It was my second race, ever. Here's everything that went wrong that day...
1. got stuck in houston traffic that day, even though I allowed plenty of commuting time (100 mile trip); arrived late to the 4/5 race
2. they were kind enough to put me in with the 3/4 guys, at which point I just wanted to see if I could hang on with the group
3. they flipped the course backwards on us because of the rain, not that it really mattered because I didn't even know the course anyway.
4. got a grand total of 3 minutes to warm up before rolling to the starting line
5. it started raining, and people started dropping out before the first corner. when I realized the guy in front of me was letting people by, the pack was already 50 meters ahead.
6. rode for several laps with stragglers until I yielded the way before getting lapped.
that sucked...
in hindsight, I should've jumped when I realized I was already behind, instead of trying to save energy. Maybe I could've caught up... but they were gunning it at like 28 mph in the first few laps.

hahah. haven't seen you say that one before, but it was told to me by someone else a few years ago when i was something like the #1 ranked cat 4 road racer (roll yer eyes!) in wyoming...out of maybe 3. you and that guy can duke it out in court.
i like that you said 'usually' as it seems you are an exception!

i did a 40K TT today, 1st time i've ever done one. It was all headwind in the last 10K, which really hurt. I ended up at 57'47", the guy who won did it in 50' and change. I think I have allot of room for improvement with regard to position, better aero and pacing strategies, etc. Found it oddly fun in a my gawd this hurts kind of way, and my legs are destroyed, like i cant stand up or sit down kind of destroyed. I had to fight beach traffic for 3 hours to get home, and i drive a stick shift. that sucked hard.

Red Kite Cat 3/4 Crit. Nothing too special here. This was my first race as a Cat 4 and it happened to be a 3/4 race. There were 50 of us and I wasn't sure what the breakdown of 3's vs 4's was, so my goal was to hang on and finish mid pack. The course was pretty straightforward, 3 90 degree turns and one easy bender of a turn. Head wind on one end, tail wind on the other.
The pace was pretty quick from the get go and never really let off (quick pace for me anyway...). There were a few attempts by folks to get away and at one point I bridged up to a group of 5 or so and quickly thought "WTF am I doing?". This was good as we were picked back up by the pack in under a minute or so and I returned to hiding out. A few primes, I thought of contending but knew it would take enough out of me that I'd probably be shot out of the back and my race would be done, so I just continued to hide out. This more or less continued for the duration of the race. We picked it up pretty good on the last two laps and I finished mid pack. Goal achieved (maybe need to set higher goals).
I did notice in my last two crits that I really need to position myself better on the last few laps as I'm giving up decent position and lose 5-10 spots in the closing turns. That isn't huge now, but as I start finishing in better position, it will likely become significant. Something to work on I suppose. All in all, happy with the result, but know I could have done better.

I hear you on the positioning. Just need to be more aggressive and defensive. I know I'm not going to outsprint anyone in the last 200m, so I need to get up there sooner and hold it.
I passing on 2Wheel tomorrow. Too long of a drive and I'm looking forward to sleeping in for once on the weekend. Best of luck, move up and hold it

Red Kite Crit #5 , 2/3's. 41st. Crashed. Hard.
In racing there are ups, and downs. Well I found a new low yesterday in this race!
First off I missed the break - took a gamble and decided not to go for breaks this time around, since so far in this series they never stuck. Of course this time it stuck.
On the last corner of the race, I'm on the outside and a guy struck a pedal or something, and started to swing wide, pushing me wide. This was about mid-turn, so it pushed me so far wide I ended up clipping a bush on the exit of the turn, and going over the bars, doing a ****ing front flip. Ugh.
Landed on my head, helmet cracked!! I guess that's what they're for. Bike is mostly ok, rear wheel a bit untrue. Hip is sore, back is scratched up, but I came out more or less ok.
Still holding on to 3rd overall in the omnium, so at least yesterday wasn't a total disaster.

Matt - Bummer! Glad to hear you're pretty much okay, though.
Is that the rear wheel you just had rebuilt a couple of weeks ago? That would add insult on top of injury.
