Ideally, I'd love for my warmup to transition directly to a race with as little delay as possible. However, I have an appointment immediately before tomorrow's race that will allow me a max of 10-15 minutes between arriving at the park and the 5:30 start signal - barely enough time to sign in and get in position.
I will, however, have an hour or two in the early afternoon (1-3) that I could get in a ride. Woudl I be better off to get in a good ride in the morning, or to have an extra few hours of rest and energy saved up in my legs?

I can race okay on no warm up. Last Sunday the fastest lap of the race was the first one and I had zero warm up, just riding to the start line about 100 yards away.
Only if I've been doing massive hours do I need to warm up. "Massive hours" means a month or or more of my normal hours in a week, so 15-20 hours in a week would be massive, like crazy massive, like I shouldn't be racing massive. At that point I'd need to do an hour or so to feel pretty good, since my legs will be pretty fatigued and sore feeling from doing 2+ hours a day for the prior week.
My last three months were Jan = 25 hrs, Feb = 14 hrs, Mar = 15 hrs, and 4 hours April. Therefore no warm up necessary.

I should add that earlier this year I started to dress at 12:58 for a 1:00 start. Bike was ready, number pinned. On the other hand it was so cold I wore bib tights (takes forever to get on), booties, a couple layers up top, etc, so it wasn't just "shorts, jersey, go". Long gloves, neck thing, head thing. I made the start, forgot to turn on the helmet cam. My sole teammate didn't think I was going to race and had already agreed to work for a friendly rival team. I ended up doing okay.

This seems like a pretty personal thing.
Personally, if I get in a proper pre-race ride either the day before or the morning before an afternoon race (meaning a 30+ min ride with a couple of jumps and efforts) then I won't usually bother with a warmup unless it's just to get in more miles for the day.
This weekend I did a race with another guy who warmed up on his trainer for about 35 mins and went straight from that on to the course. Same race, very different approaches.
You might want to experiment when you have the time to do so, if for no other reason than to see what you can get away with so when the situation arises (get lost or something) and you have to forgo the warm up you'll know if you're going to be golden or if you need to take it easy the first few miles to get your legs going.
I will add an exception. If I'm doing a good taper and have a lot of pop in my legs I might do a 20-30 min warmup with 4-5 mins of sustained efforts 'cause it seems like I always feel a lot more burn when I'm well rested then when I'm into a bit heavier training load.

Later I get the story. He showed up late, grabbed bike, put on helmet and shoes, throws $20 at the reg table (number already pinned from last week) and has not even pulled up his bibs yet, gets in the race almost a lap down, takes off his jersey, pulls up the bibs, puts jersey back on (all of this on a 6-turn, windy, short crit course), zips up, proceeds to catch and pass the field. FTW.
I guess he had enough warmup.

nice, but, got a topper for you there: the Tuesday weeknighter a few weeks back, "A" race starts and after about 5 laps of pretty fast aggressive racing, I get passed by one of our local legend cat 1's, who I never even saw at the start. He goes on to win, naturally.

If so, you can do the race, if you have trouble hanging, jump back in, at which point you should be warmed up.

I saw your picture on the podium on my team's Facebook page. Sounded like a good race

I don't think I'm who you think I am... I wasn't on a podium last weekend. And my hair is fabulous.
