Sounds rough and then I'd have nothing to gripe about if it went awry. I still think there is a dream of putting an event on in old Fair Oaks one day p/b DDA. There would be an element of chicken dodging to the crit scene, too.
My guess is the old BP guys will host it with Kinetic, but I'll poke around to see if there is an opportunity to kick in. I'd hate to see it fall apart because it is literally a crit I can coast to and it's now the only game in town with Cyclebration dead in the water.

thanks for the gentle push, @globecanvas.
doesn't go in the race rig thread as it isn't fully finished and hasn't been raced. had the frame in hand on tuesday, but i've been building it in 30' increments here and there. one more 30' block on friday should do it--move a crank over from another bike, slap on a single ring, add a saddle, and wrap the bars.
in one of life's cruel ironies, i came up sick this week and may have to bag this weekend's racing. the irrational/ever-optimistic side of me is fired up to race, but the inner realist is a bit afraid of two 60' all-out sessions right now.

So 2 years ago my wired dura ace SRM cracked. At least that is what I was told when I sent it for service. They sent me a new one at discounted rate. When I talked to them and in email I specifically aske if it will be Dura Ace version and was told yes. I received it, crank said Dura Ace, I didn't pay attention to chain ring (I know my fault). Fast forward to now. Sent it for another service, and looking at invoice it said new chainring is FSA. I was perplexed. So looked at new one they put on, and old one, and yep Full Speed Ahead (FSA) on chain rings. Looked online and the spider is indeed FSA. So two years ago they sent me FSA Spider mounted to Dura Ace crank. Seriously WTF?

Congrats @Fudgy on the baby news!
33 is still early 30's, right? Because my friend said it's the start of mid 30's, which made me feel really depressed.

I'd go with:
30-33: early thirties
34-36: mid thirties
37-39: late thirties

Gunks 10000 on Sunday. 2 hours of timed competitive climbing. Not that I will be competitive, I was solidly midpack last year, and this year I have 5 more lbs and 15 fewer CTL points. Plus my Tarmac is still in pieces, so I'll be riding a 3 lb heavier bike.
I can't decide if I should bestir myself to swap on some light tubular wheels I have. It would be 20 minutes of swapping cassette, swapping brake pads, adjusting brakes, adjusting RD. It would save about a half pound, which back of the envelope is worth maybe 30 seconds over the whole event. Meh, 20 minutes of work to save 30 seconds. Anti-meh, what do I have these wheels for if I'm not going to use them for a competitive climbing event. Meh. Anti-meh. Meh. Can't decide.

Go with meh ... leave what you have on there now. Then if you do poorly (well, more poorly than expected?), you can add the wheels to the CTL and 5lbs working against you.

it's not purely about weight--it's about ride quality, running them at lower pressure (are the roads bad?), being just a tad safer on descents....and, well, as you said -- you've got 'em, when else are you going to run 'em if not now?
cassette swap = 1'.
pad swap = 2'.
brake adjust = 2'...let's be generous and say 5 for brakes and pads.
RD adjust.......2 minutes.
i should either finish off my bike build or be asleep instead of reading/posting. got everything done except putting on a 42T single ring, calibrating the power meter, and installing a chain/setting up shifting. i figure i can leave that to 1/2 hour before my race tomorrow.

Just scheduled a fitting on Tuesday as the first step replace my current bike. I'm kind of torn because I love my bike and fit, but I feel I'm riding enough now that its time to 'level up' and pimp out my steed. Thinking about dropping down a frame size, upgrading to electronic shifting and carbon wheels. I can probably sell one of my current bikes to my brother, but I'm definitely still looking at a rather large bill. *gulp*
What is the typical amount of time (years/miles) people typically get out of their bikes? And what is the general depreciation rate?

You will get worked over by people on cheap bikes and expensive bikes alike. Upgrade of you want but if yours works keep riding it. Buy a pm if you don't have one already.

I told my 19 year old daughter she could think about putting some of her pizza store pay into the stock market, like an S & P index fund, and contribute every month for the next few decades, and she will come out ahead compared to the savings bank. I was pleasantly surprised that after about 30 minutes of explaining mutual funds etc, she's logged onto Fidelity, opening an account for $2,500, and setting up monthly contributions.

upgrade because it looks cool, or you just like the new toys, or because you have the spare cash...but, generally speaking, upgrades probably won't change how you do in events involving strategy (road racing).
IMO, one great reason to "upgrade" is if it motivates you to ride more. people spend lots of money in lots of ways, and even if someone who rides but does not race wants the deep carbon wheels i say go for it -- again if it motivates them to ride more.
of course it is your call, just trying to avoid you going into a cycle of spending money you don't have for a benefit (race results) that probably won't materialize. i'm inferring a few things here so may be off base.

there are other folks who ride/race much older gear and/or ride more miles on a particular frame each year. generally speaking, few people are wearing out a frame.
as for depreciation, it's kind of like a new car: the second you pedal it, you lose 1/2 the value. the pricier the bike the bigger hit you'll take if you sell in the first year, but with a cheaper bike the value might go to/near zero, whereas a pricier bike (say an S-Works frame vs their lower carbon frames) will at least be worth something in a few years' time. it just seems to be the way the market works and how people value things (right or wrong).

My last three race bikes have been NOS frames I have found on line. 2 or 3 seasons old means a 50-70% discount.
