How many other cyclists do you see?

Please let us know your vote and also whether your region has a vigorous transportation network designed for bicycles or not, and where you live.

A vigorous transportation network designed for bicycles means you have bike lanes, bikeways, bike routes, good signage, support for your rights from local law enforcement, and other types of roadway support for bicycling.

i see dozens of bicyclists daily on my bicycle commutes, and (tongue in cheek for this) SHOCKINGLY, not all of them are in velo lanes.

most even seem capable of riding streets that have no accomodations. wowsers, eh?

but the vigorous, yet incomplete and imperfect system that Seattle has in place encourages a lot of bicyclists to get out there and RIDE!

(we need more signage and PSAs and better traffic enforcement, just like many cities. And more veloaccomodations.)

my city isn't perfect but has a decent amount of accomodations for cyclists (there's always room for improvement in that department though).

I see about 3-4 other cyclists on a typical ride or commute. I saw an incredible amount of cyclists when I rode up to Old Greenbelt a week or so ago... probably at least 15 but I lost count.

Less then 10 with no bike network in the very urban part of Baltimore, MD.

Now if you talk about the trails, on the weekends we have dozens. These places are about the only (perceived) safe place to ride so everybody is out there. In case you guys missed this story about trail overcrowding in VA:

5 or so in nice weather, mostly zero for the balance of the year, I'll average to 1-2 riders sighted per ride.

It's a 35 km RTC, pretty ugly wide roads with traffic either backed up or flying by at 75-95 kph most of the way

I've seen two since I moved out here in January. They both waved.

Once a week or so I'll see someone that looks like they're riding out of necessity - MTB, street clothes, no helmet, sidewalk, 5 MPH, etc.

Atlanta needs more cyclists!

It really depends on the commute route I take. If I go from my house, door to door, I see only two or 3 because most of the route is along rural highways. If I go the short route, I see sometimes between 5 and 10 as it is more into the city, but still a suburban route.

In downtown Portland, coming across the bridges are thousands of cyclists, so much so in the summer that they create their own traffic jams going across the path on one of the more popular bridges. Unfortunately, this is second hand as I don't work in Portland, and even if I did, I'd be coming in from the opposite direction and not crossing any of the bridges. Apparently, in the summer, our local advocacy group, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance serves coffee and donuts or something like that to cyclists on one of the more popular bridge crossing routes.

I said 10-20. there are bike lanes and signage, etc. most of the time where there are bike lanes, people are using them, or on the sidewalk. ASU is also nearby.

On any ride, whether it's commuting to work or home or just running errands, I see many dozens of cyclists. The other day, in fact, I remarked to my son when we were heading over to the park to watch a baseball game that we were seeing more cyclists than cars. In the distance of perhaps three kilometers, we saw more than thirty cyclists, but only half as many cars and trucks.

Toronto has approx 900,000 cyclists during this time of year, perhaps more now with higher fuel prices and we have so-so bike facilities. It's generally a bike-friendli-ish city so it's not surprising to see a lot of cyclists downtown during the summer.

Between 10 and 20 on my daily 35 mile loop. We have a very extensive rails to trails system here.

In the morning, I'm lucky to see 3-4 cyclists...usually none in the winter.
In the afternoon, if it's summer and it isn't raining, I'll see 20 or more. If it's winter or raining, 0-5.
Weekend rides through the country on the roads I'll see maybe a handful...unless I get near the O&E towpath or the Emerald Necklace, either of which, in the summer, has more cyclists than a guy with only two hands and two feet can count.

Depends on where/when I ride, or course, but 10-20 fits for most of my rides (say the typical 9.5km to downtown I do several times a week for work). Ottawa has, of course, bike lanes and pathways and signage and generally friendly law enforcement. Not perfect, but certainly bike-friendly. I had a meeting with a client last night - 15km trip each way - and came across some construction. "Lane reductions", the sign said, "Do not pass cyclists". I like this city.

I commute 4 miles in urban chicago, and probably see around 50 or so cyclists each way.

I would say we have a very very good bike infrastructure in chicago. Although most of my route isnt bike laned, it is a bike route.

Rajman, you must only use that path in midday. I see 10 alone coming down from Strathcona every morning. Once on the path, its dozens. I see 10-15 during the winter from my end of town. Ride down 3rd street in the morning, there's mini-critical masses going on.

Calgary, I live in suburbia and work in an industrial park. Less than five (usually just 1 or 2). Once I saw 8 and i almost crapped my pants.

I assume you mean this time of year. The numbers go down dramatically when the weather gets colder. I chose <10, mainly because I do not ride in the heavily biked area of our city. There are cyclists all over the downtown area. I also chose a one-way number. I see about the same going to work as I see coming home.

Define other cyclists. Do you mean anyone who rides a bike? Just kids, just adults, both? Do you mean only those that ride something higher end then an x-mart bike? Do you mean only those dressed in full kit, etc?

I ride 4 1/2 miles in SW Houston and rarely see other riders except for the occassional one or two like tbdean sees. Usually Hispanic male on his way to work, sometimes wearing a hardhat.
No special accomodations in this area that I've seen, nor even wide shoulders on most streets. There are a few bike lanes closer to downtown. Busses don't have racks. Houston is lacking for two-wheeled commuters. Now if you want to join a 15 bike peleton on the rural roads west of Houston on a Saturday morning, no problem.

I voted dozens, although if you averaged all of my rides, the answer would be closer to 1-2 cyclists. I voted based on my typical weekend ride which is usually (if I'm in DE and PA) on roads with zero cyclist-specific accomodations. My typical daily ride (my commute to work) only crosses paths with 1 or 2 other cyclists. It's also on roads with zero cyclist-specific accomodations. I have found that the police officers that I see on my typical ride do support cyclists as they have pulled a guy over for harassing me and always pass safely.

I posted mine as an average of less than 10. I see several on may daily ride at 0530 or so. On weekends my rides are longer and often a bit later in the day. Weekends I see maybe a dozen or so. Biking in Southern AZ is pretty good.

One or 2 who are not kids or tweakers on work release from the diversion center.
Rural GA, they are no accommodations for bicycles anywhere in the county. No racks, lanes, etc. The downtown is tree lined, but the cops will cut your bike in half (they cut the frame) to remove it if you use a tree as a hitching post (they had a problem with kids locking their bikes outside of the pool hall, and want to teach lessons).
