With this theory how do you explain the 40 or 50 teenagers attacking this guy on a bike? If they are supposed to be more cautious because they do not know if the guy had a gun or not. Doesn't sound like they were cautious at all.

I bet if anyone else were to ride bike in this area and had a gun holster with a either a toy gun that looks real or a air pistol those teenagers would mess with you. That would be a better placebo effect then having the frame of mind people are less likely to attack you because they do not know if you have a gun or not.

How ever if I did give warning the scene from the movie Tombstone comes to mind. Where Wyatt Earp, played by Curt Russel is trying to take one of the cowboy gang in because he shot and killed the Marshall when he was handing over his gun. Ike said to turn him loose with the rest of the gang waiting to rush Wyatt. Wyatt puts the gun right to Ike's head and says "You die first get it?" "Your Friends may get me in a rush but not before I turn your head into a canoe!" Ike then wisely tells the gang to back down, but one of them says he's bluffing, to which Ike says no he's not, he'll kill me.

I kind of picture something like that IF I gave warning. I'd find the closest attacker, after I pull the gun out, put it to his head, none of this 3' away crap, I mean right at his head, and say everyone else may get me in a rush but not before I kill you. Then I'd point it at the next closest person and say you're next. Then I'd ask, ok who wants to rush me first?

I know where this area is...went to college in K-Zoo.

A gun would only get you killed. I guarantee there were a lot of guns carried by the human sewage that were attacking. A couple of hand grenades might work though.

edit: there was a lot of speculation on the race of the victim:

The group that reportedly attacked Stafford was made up of black males, according to Assistant Chief Pat Wright. Stafford's aunt said her nephew is a mixture of black, white and Native American. "None of the witnesses indicated race had anything to do with this," Wright said of the attack.
Weird sidebar: Kalamazoo is known for the Kalamazoo Promise (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalamazoo_Promise) which provides free college tuition to all students in the District.

What is this "stop or I'll shoot" you speak of? He was being beaten violently!

Why the worries about the guy using a gun to defend himself? If I was attacked by that many I'd assume that I was going to be killed anyway.
The biggest question here is how many parents and neighbors will be saying that any of the attackers are "such a good boy" or "never been in any trouble, or "that's not like him, he wouldn't do that".

Uh yeah. If you're surrounded by a crowd of people it means that someone can always 'confront' you from the blind side.

People should be required to take common sense classes before they're allowed to carry handguns around.

Well, once he was already being beaten, the chances that he could get his gun out and do something useful are slim. Unless you are prepared to be a mass murderer of unarmed people ('cause they might not be armed), you'd really have to give some sort of warning/show of force first. That, unfortunately give the bad guys the chance to shoot first.

I'm not some pacifist. This ambiguity is why I like non-fatal kinds of weapons, like pepper spray. Feeling at all threatened I wouldn't hesitate to pull it out and start spraying. I'd rather face the consequences of accidentally dousing some choir master with pepper spray, then shooting him.

Obviously once you're totally surrounded your position is compromised. I doubt it began that way though, but I'm only speculating like you.

It IS a dangerous area.

I don't think that concealed pistols are the answer, I think openly carried pistols are the answer. I am part of Michigan Open Carry (MOC) and ironically, we are actually planning a southwest Michigan open carry ride in the spring. The nation wide open carry site we formed on has had members mere presence with their sidearms out in the open prevent crimes. Most notably a bank robbery where a masked gunman ran in, saw the open carrier, and ran for it without saying a word.

1 punch can kill. 40 or 50 assailants, even if unarmed, multiply those odds 40 or 50 times. Given the distinct possibility of death anyway, the best hope someone under attack has is to start shooting, and if nothing else hope that if he or she dies the score will be like 15-1. But in truth, the odds that the assailants would run for it aren't bad. As this video demonstrates, even hardened criminals with heavy weapons don't want to die for what they are trying to steal. That would probably be even more true of a mere bike.

Just saw your post. I'm glad someone else here see's things the same way I do with carrying.

I believe there is an online petition to restore open carry rights to Florida.

You must be a youngster then. How about Ozzie Ostrich? Was on the TV from the late 70s right through to the 90s?

(ok, I admit it isn't a real ostrich. Being bright pink with some guy's hand shoved up you sorta rules it out!)

More information: https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/c...,1275263.story

The victim lived in the neighborhood and was developmentally challenged.

The crowd consisted of 40-50 youths, only a fraction of the group participated in the assault.
