Type 1 diabetics?

So Yeah... I'm kinda new to the forum here... So far I like what I've read and some of the responses from my own post. Anyways moving on to a new post now... I was just wondering if there was any Type 1 diabetics that are touring? If you have any good stories tips or advice, on riding with this condition or how you keep your insulin on long rides... Blood testing, food intake, needle disposal on the road etc... You know that sort of thing. So feel free to share Type 1's.... Well I guess type 2's as well... Or anyone else for that matter if you have something good to share!

His name is Bob Avritt and I'd be glad to put you in touch with him if you're interested.

Been type 1 for 55 yrs and its a long time since I did any overnight touring. Insulin doesnt deteriorate at normal temps for a month or two, so although you should keep it refrigerated for the long term, you dont need to keep it packed in ice when touring. When I am riding I have a Bento box (on the top of frame behind steerer) with my Glucometer, and bag of raisins. This means I can do a quick blood check without getting off the bike. I find that there is a delayed effect in the blood sugar levels after riding, it may suddenly drop 8 hrs or 24 hrs after the ride, so I will set the alarm to go in the middle of the night. You just have to take it easy until you figure out how your own metabolism works. Good luck.

bmclaughlin807- Thanks for the links. I'll be checking those out for sure.

AndrewP- Thanks for the advice and warning on a sudden drop. I know every diabetic is different but it's always good to be aware of those sorts of things.

Man, I gotta be honest. I'm kinda disappointed only two people responded to this post. And one isn't even diabetic... Oh well. I know theres gotta be more out there some where.

One of my friends is a Type I, and she's bicycled for years. She didn't get her drivers license until she was in her 40's because of worries about crashing while hypoglycemic, and she commuted by bike then.

well I am type 1 but don't ride long distance per se...I often kick out 130 miles a day for 3 days but those are day rides where I just end up back home. All I carry is powerbars, clif bars, (emergency glucose tabs I never touch) and tons of water.

multi-day rides I would use a frio wet bag for insulin, and go buy an automobile-indoor-outdoor temp
gauge from wally world and keep that with my insulin so I can ensure it doesn't get up to 90 deg.
but I am lucky if I am riding all the time my liver behaves and I don't need to touch insulin all I do is
eat like a normal person...glucose stays around 80-120 having the levemir in the background

if you are just starting test blood every 30 min until you know exactly what your exercise and insulin are doing as far as matching your output

I have a1c of 5.5 and use mdi with flex pens and levemir nightly for basal. and last year did over 20,000 miles. this year I am on target for only 11,000 miles or so I am taking a break from riding a lot

the secret is: test test test test test that is the only answer that will -always- work

NO I will not reply again or respond to any questions, don't PM me either. the answer is right here in my post
