Honkdom

Got another honk from a motorist, when I was 'taking the lane'.

It is maddening when motorists are conceited, ignorant, narcissistic and, downright stupid.

Yes, but trust me. You're better off ignoring them. Otherwise, it'll simply ruin your day and nothing else.

I think most of the other adjectives stem from one: ignorance. Impatience is all on it's own though. Add impatience to ignorance and you get rude drivers.

I don't ride in fear of motorists. I ride in consternation of motorists. When they honk, I shake my head 'NO!' and, continue riding. BUT, I do not ride at 5mph. I am going 20-25mph. Also, They have no justification for honking. Even if they are going to have an accident in their pants or, rushing to get to the hospital. Because, I can call 911 using my cell phone, faster than they can make it to the hospital. Besides, A police officer could unknowingly stop them from getting to the hospital in time, just because the officer thought they were speeding.

The only thing that bums my day, is when, I have ridden a long way for something and, what I have ridden for, is not there.

For example, my GP's secretary was going to leave instructions, on the front door of the office this weekend, as I had asked them to do. Not thinking of HIPPA, it would be understandable, why they didn't. But, They could have left me a voice mail about it. I have been bugging them all week for this info.

Sounds like you earn every honk you get.

I used to let the honking and other rude behavior get to me, and I would simmer with anger for some time afterwards. Now I wave and smile like an idiot, and this has been the only thing that lets me forget these unwelcome interactions quickly. These idiots have no right to any of my time. I find it is better than doing nothing, and far better than flipping them off. Sometimes it provides entertainment as well.

While vacationing in the Dominican Republic I took a shuttle bus from the airport to my resort. Traffic laws are virtually nonexistent there, and on the way I noticed everyone was frequently honking their horns at one another. I learned that it was common practice to warn other drivers / cyclists / pedestrians of your approach to pass safely.

Maybe, just maybe, some of the honking going on is done by drivers without aggression for your benefit.

While I can get over the honking and yelling, I have a really hard time just shrugging off dangerous behavior that puts my life and the lives of others in jeopardy. If someone just honks or yells at me I smile and wave, but if they almost hit me they're definitely getting the finger (at a minimum).
