Bicycle friendly Seattle, Driver who hit, killed teenage cyclist fined just $175
I read about drivers causing accidents all the time and getting charged with vehicular assualt.
In Wa if you cause severe injury or death, you can be charged with vehiular assualt or homicide, but it seems that only applies to car vs. car.

(1) A person is guilty of vehicular assault if he or she operates or drives any vehicle:
(a) In a reckless manner and causes substantial bodily harm to another; or
(b) While under the influence of intoxicating liquor or any drug, as defined by RCW 46.61.502, and causes substantial bodily harm to another; or
(c) With disregard for the safety of others and causes substantial bodily harm to another.
(2) Vehicular assault is a class B felony punishable under chapter 9A.20 RCW.
(3) As used in this section, "substantial bodily harm" has the same meaning as in RCW 9A.04.110.

There was was 24 year old cyclist killed on charity ride here last week. This happened when the group was stopped along a bad stretch of road. This road is narrow and hilly. No charges.

It's ironic that drivers that cause vehicular accidents are many times arrested immediatly, such as the case with Tracy Morgan. But then most cyclists are not celebrities.

You got that wrong. The easiest way to get away with killing someone in the U.S. is to run over them with your car (for detailed discussion check out this podcast: "Murder by Car"). On the other hand, if a cyclist injures a pedestrian, chances are pretty good that he will be charged with a criminal offense. A $175 fine sounds pretty harsh compared to the usual treatment.

Wanna tell me again how bicycle friendly Seattle is?
Again the only way the family will recieve any kind of justice at all is to sue the driver and his insurance company in civil court.
When it comes to criminal courts in this country, if it involves a bicycle, they are sadly a farce and a joke
