Most places that prohibit bicycling on sidewalks exempt children one way or another. Some by age, some by the size or type of bicycle.

Do we know the actual facts on this situation? How can we 100% blame the cyclist? I see walkers reading books, and poking away at their smart phones all the time.

Probably the most intelligent posts here describe the situation. One it is blown out of porportion by the media, the police, and the greedy b'crats that see extra money from fines. It gives people that dont like bikes a soap box to stand on, and poke their fingers into the air. It seems to be human nature to berate anything someone does that is not done by the complainer. My friends that golf dont understand the pleasure I get out of cycling. I dont think the hate me tho, any more than I hate them for golfing.

Agreed. At the same time. When the center of the city I mentioned above, amounted to a four-square block area in the 1950's. Pedestrians' complained so vociferously. Because of repeated collisions' with cyclists'. That the city made an ordinance banning cyclists' from the sidewalk. Since the ordinance is 60+yrs.-old. It needs to be updated, accounting for the faster and heavier traffic.
