Cyclist Attacked in Dallas

I saw this on the TV the other day and was surprised nobody has posted it:
2 Cyclists Want Justice After Alleged Attack By Motorist « CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

Not exactly the way I would have handled it when I was active in law enforcement.

BTW, Merry Christmas to all riders....stay safe.

Dang! I wonder what really happened there. It sounds as if the male driver beat up a female cyclist as well. Crazy.

The male cyclist doesn't say the extent of his epilepsy, that necessitates having another rider with him. But, In this situation, I am glad the second cyclist was there. Because, While he did not have a seizure. I am sure that this would have ended up an 'open and shut' case.

I have epilepsy and don't drive, by choice. My epilepsy is under control.

I have heard of motorists' with epilepsy who's license was revoked by the state. When they were involved in a vehicle-vehicle accident and did not have a seizure. Yet the state blamed them anyway.

Losing a fight does not make you the innocent person. The truth is likely somewhere in the middle. Biking is very popular in Seattle, and you will find aggressive drivers and bicyclists who ignore all rules and fly the bird at upset drivers. If the two shall meet, it can lead to problems. Luckily both are the exception and not the rule.

Granted, and no, having a serious health issue is not 'carte blanche' for guilt or innocence. But it still shouldn't be treated like an 'open n' shut' case.

Agreed. But getting to the truth at this point will be very hard.

i worked for years with violent youth. One pulled a kid out of a wheelchair and beat the crud out of him. People were outraged. Then we found out the kid in the wheelchair had been tormenting the other boy for years, believing, no matter what, nothing would occur. The father of the boy in the wheelchair told his son he got what he deserved.

Violence is not a solution, but folks have to know it is a possibility when a confrontation begins. That is why you need to choose your words carefully if you want to avoid it.

Any sort of camera would have helped with the ensuing encounter, even if the incident wasn't visible.

The pair was riding down Cedar Springs Rd in Dallas with another cyclist Friday night.

What the hell happened to the third cyclist when things went south?

Yeah, this is yet another reason I'm glad I ride with cameras now. We had some dudebro in a camaro scream "gay!" at us during a night ride through Ft. Worth the other night. That could have easily escalated into a similar situation as this one. Difference being there were 14 cyclists in the group and only two dudebro's.

I think this is a case where pepper spray used defensively would have been appropriate.

I suspect that when called out to the aftermath of a fight with no witnesses there, and (obviously) conflicting statements from the parties the cop decided to kick it upstairs by citing both parties and letting the judge sort it out.

Remember, that he's just writing up a report based on the statements of the participants, both of which probably claimed to be victims. Even with the 2nd bicyclist there, mos people would still threat it as both being guilty (possibly).

My experience with police in a couple of similar situations has been that the police officers err on the side of the motorist despite 2 against 1 testimony. Until police everywhere realize how the one sided nature of an on road confrontation between cyclists and motorists puts human beings in danger and take action to sanction drivers who drive irresponsibly, nothing will change
