Trek Madone carbon steerer tube failure

Has anyone outside of my racing district heard accounts of the Madone steerer tube breaking unexpectedly (i.e. not as a result of a direct impact)?

My understanding is that they took material from the steerer tube to re-enforce the BB shell..blame WR. From what I've read on this (and it hasn't been a lot) it's confined to the 2010 Madones.

3 failures I know of directly since 5/15 ... cervelo had a similar problem a couple of years ago and had a recall, maybe they helped trek with some manufacturing.

Stuff breaks.

That being said it seems like a lot of Trek stuff breaks with BF posters.

maybe the weight of an ibike on the handlebars caused the cracking

His was aluminum. This is why I'll only ride reinforced concrete steerer tubes.

Yikes, I have one of these. Going to check it over tonight.

Although I've seen photos of the issue, and it looks like a stem issue that is messing up the steerer tubes. I don't have that stem.

Yeah (shown with 6nm of torque applied):

The bottom part bends/stretches(?) and marks the steerer tube, I think?

Yeah... I had a 6.9 Madone (2009) where the steerer broke after 1.5 months... the frame cracked in multiple places over the remainder of the season. I originally noticed the steerer issue returning from a ride when I had the clicking noise normally associated with a loose headset. I tried increasing the bearing preload w/o success. That's when I pulled the stem to find the steerer cracked from top to bottom. Took Trek 1-1/2 months during race season to get me a replacement.

That photo looks really familiar.

Really really familiar.

Do you know BV, too?

the 3 that i know of breaking first hand (i.e. seen with my own eyes) each have different stem and handlebar combinations.

Don't tell me things like that.

Small world Someone should come out with a "degrees of separation" webapp.

I would be worried if I were you, Ze (about the steerer tube, I mean).

Yes you can check, take off the stem and look at the steerer tube, you will see either aluminum or carbon. I have a 2010 5.5, it has an aluminum steerer tube.

I got mine at a price I couldn't refuse either. Get one, if you are concerned get a 5 series with an aluminum steerer tube. I am sure if it's an issue Trek will fix it.

My team shop sells canondale and trek, all 5 2010 super six frames they sold to teammates all had to be returned because the BB shell came un-bonded, just like WR's Trek. Another friend of mine had the same issue with his Super Six in March. My teammate's 09 Super Six cracked where the downtube meets the BB. All manufacturers products break.

That being said, if I had a 6 series Madone with a carbon steerer tube, I'd be concerned and eagerly awaiting a response from Trek and probably swap the fork to one with an aluminum steerer tube in the mean time.

Trek sent out a tech bulletin on 5/24 basically saying installation error and don't use fsa stuff with their stuff. The bulletin read like a lawyer wrote it. If I can find it ill post it when I get to a desktop.
