Wow. That's cheap. I called around in Sac and was quoted $200. Maybe I'll make a trip to the bay.

Bernie Mikkelsen (http://www.mikkelsenframes.com/pages/803204/index.htm) out of Alameda uses some really good paint/powdercoat place in the Bay Area for all of his frames. You should give him a call and get their number

For those in SF, A-1 Underground Powdercoating on Valencia do pretty good work. Around $140 to strip and powdercoating. Finish is pretty damn good, no problems dealing with them and the finish really holds up.

For really good custom paint, I've heard lots of good things about D+D Cycles in San Lorenzo.

D+D is who Mikkelsen uses, I believe.

I'm curious how some shops can strip and powdercoat for $75 while others charge $140 or more.

I was thinking of going through the painter in Chico that Rex uses. I think it's around $200. Granted this is for my marinoni road bike...not my fixie. I want to get the fixie powdercoated to stand up to the abuses of loking up downtown.

powder coat or paint? what exactly is the diff?

powder coat is a baked on finish. you give the part to be powder coated a electric charge and then give the powder the opposite charge. then the part is sprayed with the now attracted powder. then the part is baked in an oven. the resulting finish is more like having a pyrex or porcelain coating on your part. paint is just not that scratch resistant in most cases. some paints have been developed that are comparable, but from what i hear, they are quite expensive compared to powder coat.

I've heard that stripping powdercoating can be a pain in the arse, as opposed to paint. I was told this by a machinist, any truth to it?

with the right chemicals it doesn't have to be. we're talkin scary chemicals.

i did one frame in a matter of minutes with some stuff called "strip-eze" i think it was called that i got from the sherwin williams store. it took me longer to get ready for possible spillage/splashing than it did to actually strip the powder. (put on the heavy duty chemical resistant gloves, goggles, pants, sweatshirt, have the water hose ready)

There are also significant environmental benefits to powdercoating. No overspray and things like that. I had a MTB frame done in 93 after years of hard riding there is not one ding but a few scratches but not down to metal.

I called the manufacturer of my road bike, they had new decals for around $10. I was surprised due to the bike being built in the late 80's. Is Pinarello still around? NM, thier web site tells me yes ;)

for people in portland, check out acme paint. they're amazing....

also, fyi (though more for the roadies than the fixies): you apparently can't powdercoat carbon.

you apparently can't powdercoat carbon.

not surprising given that way that powder coating works.. basically, the powder and frame are given opposite electrical charges which causes the powder to be attracted to the frame (after it is on the frame it is baked to keep it on). my chemistry may be a bit off these days, but carbon won't take a charge in the same way that metals do (unless there is something else in the carbon compound, that is).

i think that it has less to do with that and more to do with the high heat required for the process.

Will the beadblasting remove rust or is there further treatment necessary?

D+D is the place...both Mikkelson and Travis @ Freewheel recommend them. You pay for it tho. if you look at the cyclart website, they talk about the dangers of getting a bike painted at a car painter pay the money
