I was riding home yesterday on my cruiser and I broke a crank. It's a GT Kustom Kruiser from 2000 so I suppose it could have been metal fatigue. Anyway, I feel like the luckiest guy in Grand Rapids because I was standing on the pedals when it happened and I landed on my feet (and not my face). Guess I should lay off the 'roids, eh?

I always hate it when something on the bike breaks or goes flat.

WOW! That certainly could've ended much worse than it did! Makes me want to go out and check mine ... Glad you're OK!!!

Thanks! This is a cautionary tale about inspecting the bike when it doesn't feel right...before it broke it sort of felt like the core of that pedal was bent and I made a note to swap out the pedals (the ones on there are plastic. I have some proper rubber ones to slap on). I shoulda looked a little harder because I would have found a giant crack in the crank. There was a patch of rust across the broken face so I assume it cracked and the elements were able to go to work on it.

I seriously lucked out!

I can honestly say I thought broken cranks were a rarer occurrence, but I'm finding out the opposite is true. I guess I've just been lucky all these years - in the 30 years I've been on two wheels, I've never broken one. Pedals, sure, but never a crank. Heck, I'm on my third set of pedals on my Rip Curl in two years, and it has just under 1,700 miles on it. I'll certainly be keeping close tabs on the thing now!

On my mystery cruiser, the sprocket tab, finger, whatever had broken off, a wall was what stopped me, the tire saved the rim from bending with the fork.
