Need help with replacement fork for '97 Rock Hopper.

I have a 97 Rock Hopper which came to me with a non-factory suspension fork. I'd like to convert it back to a chro-moly fork similar to what it came with originally. Most likely I'll buy a used one eBay. Bascially I'd like some advice on what sizing I need to get, I believe the frame is 19". Can I buy a fork with a longer tube than mine and simply cut it down? The bike uses a threadless stem so I figured size wouldnt matter as long as it's not too short. Anything else I need to know? Thanks!

You'd probably want something like a 80mm 1x1: https://surlybikes.com/parts/forks/1x1_fork

Yes you can cut the steering tube down, a star nut will need to be put in the new fork and you will need to take the crown race off the old fork and put it on the new one.

Thanks a lot for those replies. Didnt realize I could buy a new replacement fork so cheaply, that's awesome. As I mentioned in my introduction thread I was a mechanic from around 81-88, but since threadless stems came out after I left the business I'm unfamiliar with them. I have a lot of catching up to do.

You can go even cheaper, if you want to...

Bikewagon has the cantilever-only version of the Surly 1x1 for $68. Should be a nice fork, and possibly one of the few name-brand options if you're buying new, but it is suspension-corrected to replace a suspended fork. The front end of your bike will sit 80 mm higher than if you were using a fork like your bike's original. That shouldn't be a problem, especially if you like how it rides with the aftermarket fork you currently have.

If you want to buy a non-corrected fork to get closer to the bike's original geometry, Niagara Cycle carries some inexpensive 26" forks. They're not high end by any means, but I've used a few and have been happy with them. 1 1/8" Cro-Mo forks start under $45, in either BLACK or CHROME.

Hey thanks for those links. I like that Pyramid fork, I think I might just order one of those today.

Btw, why did manufacturers switch to threadless forks - what is the advantage to it over the older threaded type?

Threadless is quicker and easier to install and you can make roadside adjustments with your standard toolkit allen key, ideal for tourists. You loose some height adjustability but also some weight.

Consider getting a fork with disk mounts, this is a simple upgrade and well worth it if you ride in wet or muddy conditions.

Thanks for the info. i dont ride in mud or water and plan on sticking with rim breaks. I have another question though, will this fork work for my application? Vintage Dirt Research Tange Mountain 1 1 8" Threadless Steerer 26" Fork Canti | eBay

I'm mostly curious if the current front brake from the Rock Hopper will mount without any difficulties. It currently has a direct pull Deore unit on it, which is mounted to the suspension fork I want to replace. Thanks.
