what is this thing?

just sizing up a road bike for myself, still undecided what handlebar to use.. that bar or drop bars. and the drive train, 3 spd internal hub or single chainring 7 spd external.

it's a tange 5 frame, when i got it, it was fitted out with quality shimano gear .. drop bar etc, minus the wheels. and because its got no decals it lends itself for a respray.

i noticed a small fitting on the rear drive side of the frame after clamping it to the stand

anyone know what's it for?

It's a chain hanger.

If you ever have reason to remove the rear wheel, like maybe to carry your bike in your car trunk, hang your chain on that little knob. It'll keep your chain and derailleur nice and straight and make it easier to replace the rear wheel..

It's a chain hanger. When you don't have a wheel installed, you can loop your chain around it to keep it from dangling in the way.

I love the chain hanger on my bike but always forget to actually use it when doing bike maintenance.
