Grinding sound but free turning on flip flop hub

Hi,

I have a Formula flip flop hub. The freewheel side makes a grinding sound ONLY when vertical (i.e. right way). If the hub is rotated horizontally no grinding sound (freewheel side can be up or down doesn't matter). I tried flipping the axel incase it was the cones but no change.

The only issue I can think is when I repacked the free wheel side I packed in a bit of grease in there, but this sounds like a grinding sound. It's all perplexing as the wheel turns nicely.

With the wheel off the bike, does the freewheel make noise when you turn it in the free-spinning direction (counter-clockwise when you face the FW)? If so, the problem is with the bearings inside the freewheel mechanism. This is independent of your wheel bearings.

With the FW removed, try flushing the inside of the FW with WD-40. You are aiming for the gap between the rotating and non-rotating parts of the FW. Then, shake as much crud as possible out of it. It's probably road grit that splashed into the FW when you rode in the rain. After flushing, drip some light machine oil into the FW and spin it to distribute the oil.
