Bicycle pedals, is there one main standard axle size?

Do typical adult sized mountain bikes have incompatible pedals, or is there usually one standard for most typical bikes? I'm looking to buy new pedals as the ones I have are simply worn out.

I found a pair that states: "Axle: 9/16"", is this likely to fit? Or do mountain bikes often have different sizes for this?

I believe the ones I have are simply "Flat and platform" (from reading the Wikipedia article). There is no clip on function, strap or equivalent feature.

The majority will take the 9/16" size.
HOWEVER, many cheaper bikes with 1 piece cranks will use 1/2" because the crank arm is too small of a diameter for a larger hole.

Yes, most decent bikes will use the 9/16" pedal thread. Some cheaper ones use 1/2" and older French bikes used 14mm.

If you have the cranks in post 2, then you have 1/2". Otherwise 9/16.

A lot of one piece cranks are 9/16" too. I often get cheap 9/16" spindle pedals from one piece crank bikes that are being scrapped.

Cheers

Thanks for all the answers!

This is the setup I have:

It appears to have the label "Shimano" on the side. Does that make it conclusive? Is this 9/16"?
