I warm up my brand new chains in a metal tray using a heat gun (hot air) and then put a drop of White Lightning's Easy Lube from Walmart on each link where it gets sucked right into the space between the roller and pin. A few minutes later it hardens and then I go back and put a drop of Boeshield T9 in each roller too. After a day or so the Boeshield dries out, sort of.

I started using Squirt after that report but I found my drivetrain noise to increase and that annoyed me. So I switched to Rock N Roll.

I use wax. I put my chain in a tin pie pan, sprinkle it with graphite, put it in the oven at 185, take it out and rub the wax over it. Turn it over and repeat. The most time consuming part is heating up the oven. Lasts for 800-1,000 miles, but I dislike a noisy drivetrain, so I usually redo it before it starts squeaking. I haven't noticed a change in chain life, either longer or shorter, but things are less messy and it doesn't hold on to dirt.
