Mavic Yksion hole in sidewall

Yesterday evening I hopped on my bike and almost immediately my rear tire goes flat. As it turns out, there is a hole where the sidewall and bead touch. The tires have just over 1200 miles on them. I was expecting these tires to have quite a few miles left in them. I've ridden pretty much exclusively on good quality roads, never on any dirt/gravel/etc. I haven't run unusually low pressures. Is this unusual? I can post a photo later, if it might help.

Rim brake? If so, I suspect your brake pad was too high and rubbed the tire when you applied the brakes. Otherwise, it could be damage from road debris. Either way, just get a new tire and move along. Stuff happens.

Why so many posts from cyclists regarding tires that have sidewall failures, tread that wears prematurely versus expectations, or just don't seem to last.

You can NOT have the following in a tire:

Fast racing tire
Long Lasting
Light weight

There are great racing tires for road race bikes.
There are great long lasting belted and bombproof touring tires.

There aren't tires that are both.

It's like the scene in the Mel Gibson movie the Patriot, where he is trying to build a beautiful handmade artisanal chair that doesn't go over a certain very lightweight threshold.

My advice is if you're predisposed to complain in Internet forums about tires failing as lightweight race tires do, then forego racing tires. You're not actually racing are you? Do you run drag strip slicks on your family car then complain that they don't get good traction in the wet?

I probably have a Mavic takeoff single tire lying about in the shop. PM me.
