Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

time for new tires already!!!

so at the beginning of the season i purchased a set of schwalbe ultremo r.1 tires.. needless to say i have about 1000 miles on them and they are done. i was cleaning my bike tonight and just doing a general inspection of the components. i was looking over the tires and noticed that i need to replace them both, not because of wear but because they both have cuts in them big enough for the tube to poke out by a tiny pin hole.

so here we go, it is time for new tires... i loved these tires because they road amazingly and they were super sticky. but i think for the money they should have lasted longer. can you guys recommend a tire for me? what is everyones experience with the PR3? will those last longer then the schwalbe?

I recommend Continental Grand Prix 4000. Fast, sticky, durable, great all around riding/racing tire. Not cheap at $65 a piece or so at a LBS, but can be found online (pbk) for under 40 a lot.

you can always boot the tire from behind with some fabric.

the fabric, as long as you choose something strong like tyvex or denim or kevlar, will never wear out before the tire.
the tire won't just spontaneously rip apart on you either, because they have a strong fabric to hold the rubber together.

I think you'd have to pull something like 1.5G laterally before you tear apart tires.

"You think"?

I'd bet my life on that. Sure I would.

to put simply, I've done this and never suffered a blow out caused by it.
all punctures were from some other sharp object.

you can't even pull 1G with a bike in any sideways direction.
full front braking is like a 0.75G

but, hey, instead of tossing them, you can always send them to me, I'll use them.
