Trek Adjustable Quill Stem issue

I have a Trek 7300 (1999 I Think) and I noticed this is cracked. I looked everywhere online on how to fix it and came up with nothing...so I'm asking here. Can that rubber / plastic piece be replaced or do I need a whole new adjustable quill stem? I can't even find anything online with anything even close to this with the plastic or rubber piece in it (looks dry rotted). I am guessing they don't make them like this for that reason?! I just don't want the thing separating while riding. Anyone have anything like this happen and can it be fixed...if now and the whole thing needs to be replaced, how do I measure it to see what size I need? Thanks for any suggestions or advice.

Also just found out I can't post pics yet until I have 10 posts, so I guess you can imagine what it looks like...or go to flickr and type in mikeshermer in the search and then click on people and the pics will show up.

i'd advise just getting a stem that gives you the height/extension you like, and install it... those "adjustable" ones typically get set once, then stay put for years... and they are HEAVY.

a local Co-op bike shop will have many stems to choose from, and will cost less too!

Welcome! Your 7300 likely has an aluminum Promax stem. My wife's 7100 had one that was seized when we bought the bike. I replaced it with a Zoom adjustable stem and really like that Zoom stem. Your 7300 likely has a 1-1/8" threaded headset, so be sure you get the right size. If it is the larger headset size, the stem itself will have a 25.4mm diameter. You may have a hard time finding a fixed stem that will offer both the height and the reach that you need. I'd just buy a new adjustable one and get back to enjoying the bike.

Here are the pics, for everyone's reference:

I would not try to repair that stem.

I think your frame might be too small for you.

Just a guess based on how high the handlebar is. Looks like the saddle might be pretty high too.

Take it to bits and see what you have got. Third pic seems to look as if there are two bolts. Given the joint is rotatable I would guess that the stem to handlebar section has a circular section that fits to a circular cut-out in the stem section. The bit of plastic will/may have a similar circular cut-out which is intended to clamp down on the stem to handlebar section.

Once you have found out what sort of profile the plastic bit has make friends with a neighbour who has the appropriate tools to chop up a lump of aluminium with a similar profile with an oversized circular cut-out. Fit a stiff rubber insert in the cut-out and bolt things back together again.

The first one. I can see the saddle protruding beyond the stem and the post through the stem.

Exactly. Like me. And the bigger the frame, the better the saddle/handlebar height relationship is for achieving that.

Components are covered for just one year for the original buyer, that is LONG ago. so Buy a new stem.

a steel stem raiser tube and a short extension quill stem in it,
or Soma makes a tall quill to threadless conversion piece, then you put a threadless stem on top of it..
