8 or 9 speed front derailleur?

Presently I am running an 8 speed setup on my mountain bike. My crankset is a 9 speed and the rear derailleur is also compatible with 9 speed. Some time in the future, i will probably upgrade to 9 speed but for now I will stick with 8.

Trouble is that i am needing a new front derailleur. It is starting to show signs of wear and has way more flex in the cage than it used to. Anyway, given all that info: Will a 9 speed front derailleur work with 8 speed shifters, chain, and cassette? It seems most logical to go to the 9 speed front der. if it will work.

Either will work fine. The only difference between 8 and 9-speed front derailers is a slightly narrower cage on the 9.

As I understand it, a 9-speed front derailleur has a cage that's a shade narrower than an 8-speed. If it was my bike I'd buy the 9-speed front derailleur and set the cable tension so the chain runs smack through the middle when in the middle, middle combination. If that resulted in a little chain rub when in the biggest or smallest cassette cogs, I'd live with it.
