Campy 8 spd Hub upgrade?

Campy 8 spd Hub upgrade?
Can a Campy Record hub with a 8 speed freehub be upgraded to 10 speed just by swapping in the 10 speed freehub? I have a spare 10 spd freehub and access to a 8 speed wheel as a back up.

The above link explains the differences in cassette hubs. Unfortunatley, I bookmarked the 8 sp conversion page but the new owners took it down. It was the only in depth explanation of what was involved. I e-mailed the new owner to see if still is up but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm interested in doing this as I have a very nice 8 sp wheelset.

I had already looked through Branford and saw what the physical difference between the 8 and 10 speed free hubs are. With the hubs both being 130mm I'm hoping it is as easy as unbolting the 8spd free hub off the axle and then bolting on the 10 spd one I have. I would just like to confirm what is involved before I buy the 8spd hub to get a back up rear wheel built.

This morning I e-mailed Branford and they took the parts listing off their site because he said Campy doesn't make all the parts. He didn't elaborate what they still made though. For what it cost to upgrade the cassette hub body you can almost buy a new 10 sp hub.
If I had it to do again I would have reused my rim and bought new spokes and a hub. Good luck

Thanks for the info. I understand what you are saying about Campy replacement part $$$ ... thats why I'm looking at this. I have a Zonda rear with a cracked rim and replacement rims are stupid expensive. So I'm buying a new wheel set, but want to have a back up rear wheel.
I found a dirt cheap Record 8 spd hub and would use the Zonda (record/chorus) Al 10 spd freehub, pawls etc already installed that is sitting in front of me. From the pic of the '99- hubs on Branfords site the freehub attachment looks the same as the Zonda. (item N in the pic) ... just unbolt the locknut (O) and slide freehub off. I just can't tell if the hub casting(P) for the freehub to insert into is the same size. If this works it saves me $100 or so in hub cost on building my backup rear.

Before doing all of that, check out Colorado Cyclists "custom wheels". A Campy Record 10-speed hub built with a Mavic Open Pro or CXP-33 rim is $246 - $250 brand new. I believe CC is offering free shipping on orders over $150 also. Between modifying your hub, purchasing a new rim and spokes and lacing it up, can you get under that price?
I agree about Campy parts pricing. It does make "disposable parts" seem reasonable. For example, Branford Bike wants $9 EACH for the little plastic bearing retainers used in current Campy hubs, and this is only for the plastic ring, it doesn't include the bearings themselves. Be careful if you break the originals during an overhaul!
