Clincher Wheels Need Clincher Tires?

I'm not entirely sure but I just was curious to ask.

(Sorry if this is an extremely newbie question)

Can you run a clincher wheel with just any tire or am I completely wrong?
Do you have to run clincher wheels with tires that are specifically clincher tires?

Most tyres you will come across are clincher-specific. Essentially, if they require a tube and they're the right size you can use them.

You should use "clincher" tires with your clincher rims due to the bead and seat. To do otherwise could place yourself in serious risk of injury should the tire come off the rim. There should be a stamping on the rim that tells you what the size is, and you will notice in the on line catalogs the tires that come in those sizes. Visit Sheldon Brown's web site for a nice discussion on tires.

As opposed to running tubular tires on a clincher rim? I have seen that done out of desperation, ie. when the rider on clinchers has flatted, has already used the spare tube, and the riding partner on tubulars lends a spare to get home. It's not something you'd want to do except in dire circumstances, and then only with extreme caution. But maybe that's not what you were asking(?)
