Campy 9 speed derailleur substitute?
Hello, building up my new road bike and having a bit of a problem trying to find a campy 9 speed rear derailleur and am wondering what else I can substitute for it? 10 speed? 8 speed? Something off the wall like SRAM? (USED stuff is perfect) For your information, I am using a campy 9 speed cassette and a campy 10 speed chorus crank (front derailleur hasn't been purchased yet).
Sorry for the stupid question, I am still new to this world.

I sure wouldn't recommend building up a 9 speed bike, now that Campy has mostly forgotten about it with 10 speed fading fast and 11 speed getting all of the development.
9 speed shifters can be converted to 10 speed fairly cheap, but the lowest priced 10 speed shifters are so cheap, it's hardly worth doing the conversion. New Veloce shifters are only about $120 and that includes a new cable set worth about $50.
Depending on the model year of the shifters, they may only work best with RDs older than 2001. In 2001 Campy changed the RD actuation ratio slightly. Older shifters only work perfectly with the older RDs.
Forget about trying to mix other brands of RDs. It won't work.

Any Campy 8 or 9s RD pre'01 will work if you don't want to go with 10 just yet. I picked up my 9s Chorus RD for about $50 off of ebay. I bid on a lot of them cheaper but none slipped through so I paid up. For your front you can use any old 8,9, or 10s Campy. I've mixed and matched 'em all. You won't need to spend more than $15 shipped for one.

Thanks Bob. I'm going to go a local bike shop after I get my frame in and get a nicer 8 speed derailleur then. No way am I making the jump to 10 speed as I already everything besides the rear derailleur and the chain. I would not like to go through the trouble of finding another set of hubs, delacing the wheels I'm building up, selling the ergo levers I have and all of that other jazz. Just does not sound like fun.
