Carbon Crankset questions

I have some questions about carbon cranksets and hope someone could clarify and help me decide if I should go for it.

1. In a carbon crankset (incl. bottom brancket) , what exactly are the carbon parts? i know the crankarms for sure, but what else?

2. the set I am looking at weighs 935 grams (including bottom bracket). It is a triple. Is the weight savings considerable to standard crank sets?

Thank you for help.

The carbon cranks that I have are only carbon arms.

If you know what set you are looking at, go to their web site. It should have weights.

There is one carbon fiber crankset (double only) that uses a CF spindle but it weighs a lot less than 900 grams and the price reflects it. Check out the Look Zed.

As for savings over a standard (aluminum) crankset, it depends on the crankset. The new Ultegra 6703 triple has a claimed weight of 785 grams with BB.

Is there a specific reason you are looking to buy a new crankset?

Take a gander here:

Most people don't quite care about weight for a triple setup.

They do make cranks with carbon rings but they're not very durable yet. I've only ever heard of them being used in applications where shifting isn't done regularly (TTs, some track applications).

If it's important to you to have the carbon on there I'd suggest going with something like this with a carbon spider and an aluminum ring.

here it is

the model i am looking at is FSA SLK Triple Crankset With MegaExo Bottom Bracket (53/39/30) for 400 dollars. if it's just the crankarms, maybe it's not worth it.

Could you maybe tell us what bike you plan on putting this on? A touring bike? A regular road bike? You're not really saving any weight by speccing carbon for a triple. For example the Deore XT incl bb weight is ~ 900g. for approx half the cost of what you plan on buying. Carbon isn't always necessarily lighter by a significant amount.

I can't think of an application that the FSA would be better than something less expensive. If it shifts like any of the other FSA doubles I'd avoid it like the plague.
