Spoke Notches in hub??

DeoreLX hubs off a used wheelset. All the spoke holes on the drive side rear hub have tiny discolored notches. I want to use them to build another set of wheels. Is this a good idea?

If I reverse the threading pattern, I can miss all the notches, which will then be pretty much hidden by the spoke heads. Sounds good to me, unless there's structural integrity or safety issues.

Hubs like this are cheap, but I hate to waste!! What do you think?

don't make new notches in the hub if you can prevent it.

As AEO hinted...lace likewise with the new rims...

I'm not sure I'm getting the message.

Are spoke notches from steel spokes in alloy rims a normal occurance, or do they indicate something was done wrong somewhere along the line?

it's normal.

aluminum isn't very a very hard metal and the steel spokes 'bite' into the hub shell. all used hubs made from aluminum will have these marks, indicating how it has been laced previously. These indents are stress risers and it's best to keep stress risers to a minimum by using the same cross pattern in the same orientation if at all possible. Hub flanges will crack and are more likely to do so if you keep making new bite marks, like going from a 3x to radial on the same hub.

That's why it's best to buy new hubs instead of used, if at all possible, unless it's a smoking deal.

I got my set of LX/Sun Zero Degree wheels for $90. You'll likely have that much into spokes and rims, but like has been said, if you're going to do it, do the same pattern and make sure the spokes are oriented the same way.
