Rear derailer bent!
Im pretty new at road biking and i just did my longest trip. 85 mile from schenectady to Lake George. But I think I bent my rear derailer. I have a shimano sora derailer and it appears to be bent outwards away from the wheels. I think it may have bent when I fell over( i just got the spd pedals and shoes, had a few falls ; ) I think that it bent and it is preventing me from shifting into 1rst gear, plus the derailer seems to be making alot more noise and gear grinding than it used to. Is there anything i can do to unbend it, or should i just bring my bike into a shop?

I faced a similar problem, but examine whether it is the dropout connector piece. My aluminum piece got bent slightly, so I bent it back in shape.
If it is really the RD mechanism that deformed, examine whether you can adjust the tension the cable (usually a finger-tightening extension - a piece of semi-ergonomic plastic - right where the cable meets the RD). Eyeball it with your left eye: The upper small gear should coincide exactly with the desired cog.
If it's impossible, replace.

Mechanic/Tourist
It's difficult to straighten the hanger so that it's correctly aligned and even more difficult to do the derailleur - not always possible. I would recommend you take it to a shop.

+1 Take it to a shop. You probably bent the hanger, not the derailleur. But either way, you will need a bike shop to square it away.

+2 (? i'm new to this forum stuff). How well your derailleur is aligned to your cassette will directly impact the functional range of adjustment (call it wiggle room) for your derailleur. If it is out if alignment, it may be nearly impossible to get it to shift correctly throughout the whole cassete. Even if you can it may fall out of adjustment quickly. Properly aligned you may be able to turn your barrel adjuster a whole turn before the derailleur stops shifting properly.
A straight hanger will shifter more accurately and for longer without problems.
