Road Caliper Brake Pad Replacement

I've finally gotten around to replacing pads on my racing bike & touring bike. I'm using the black Swiss Stops.

I've got Shimano Ultegra 6600 calipers and the better Tektro's that Specialized puts on their bikes. Tektro must have done a lost wax casting of the Shimano pad holders.

My question is about the third screw on the Ultegra holders. Obviously you have the attachment screw, then the pad screw. The Ultegra's have another screw, that is a round head flat blade machine screw. Kinda odd screw for a bike. I have no idea of it's purpose.

Can you post a picture? I'm trying to find a picture showing this mysterious screw but I can't.

Shimano calls it a "tire guide," though I thought the *fins* on the holders were the actual guides. #13 in the pic.

The "screw" is actually a plastic plug and, IIRC, it's sort of a wear indicator. When the pads wear down even with the ends of the plugs it's time to replace them. They are easier to check than looking for the grooves in the pads since you don't have to remove the wheel to see them.
