Nine speed ultegria brifter with old eightspeed DA drivrtrain?

Sheldon Browns says this is a doable option . Anybody have any personal experience ? https://sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html

I have the parts so I guess I will see if it will work. My only wrinkle is I am running a 8 speed sachs freewheel , which is working great with the DA downtube shifters and RD.

Hmm. I thought the 7400 used a different pull ratio. I wouldn't expect it to index correctly.

I would also agree that it would not work. That cable trick would work the other way around (8 speed DA shifter with modern "9 speed" derailleurs). Shimano really wanted you to have to buy the whole drivetrain

i agree with the op that according to sheldon's chart "Any 9speed shifter" will work with 8 speed pre97 durace RD. I guess your best bet is to just try it out.

Here is a chart that shows that a Shimano 9 speed shifter with an early D-A RD will work with a Shimano 8 speed cassette.

Let's just clear up that Sheldon clearly stated that the OP's setup should work in theory: https://sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html#indexing (4th row: Any 9-speed shifter, 8-speed freewheel/cassette, old Dura Ace RD)

It's practical experience and feedback the OP is looking for.

Well I opened up my 9 speed shifter so I could flush with Brake clean, blow out and lube with Triflow. My $3.50 dead shifter now works wonderfully and indexes with the DA 8 speed stuff like it was made for it.
