Suspension to rigid fork
I've been given an incomplete Specialized Crosstrail but the suspension fork is in tough shape. I'd like to convert to a rigid fork. What special considerations are there, if any, when converting from suspension to rigid?

suspension travel ... axle to fork crown, distance , minus a little sag as usual for rider weight
gives you the rigid fork axle to crown race seat blade length, to shoot for..
then the rake/off set in relation to head angle steering axis,
, plotted on the ground , is trail distance
Trail determines a lot of the steering feel..

That's the handling part of it ^
The nuts and bolts is that you need a fork with that same size steerer tube (1" or 1 1/8") and either threaded or threadless depending on what you have. The steerer tube also needs to be the right length. If threadless, it needs to be long enough or too long so it can be cut down.

I think I see what you're concerned about. You want it to retain the same upright characteristics.

I'd find an inexpensive suspension replacement. Specialized used the RST & Suntour forks per bikepedia. You might be able to upgrade it to a better one for the right bargain. Or otherwise let the LBS rebuild it if they can ? Speculating, but perhaps the give away was because it cost more than it was worth to track one down ?
