Sram X7 shifter compatibility

I'm building up a frame (Rocky Mountain Metro) with a mix of road/mountain components. Use will be a city cruiser with some rail trail type stuff mixed in as well as an occasional commute. I'd like to use Sram x7 2X10 shifters with a Sram mountain rear derailleur. No issue there. However, I'd like to pair it with a 36-46 10 speed cyclocross crank. Will the x7 shifters work with a Sram road (Apex) front derailleur? I think the cable pull is the same, but thought I'd get some advice from someone that has tried it before spending away!
