Derailleur tension issue

I am installing a derailleur for the first time. After attaching the derailleur to the hanger and installing the chain, there is very little tension on the chain and the cage is almost touching the cassette, leaving no room to actually shift the gears.

What am I doing wrong?

Please take a look at the attached photo.

Looks like it could be the B screw adjustment.

From the picture I don't see a "B-screw" on that derailleur but it appears the "tab" on the derailleur's mounting boss that should be behind the projecting ear on the hanger is actually in front of it. Remount the derailleur with that tab behind it.

Also, have you sized the chain correctly? Most chains come quite a bit longer than needed and are "cut" to length to fit the application.

The first thing wrong is that we have too little information. What gear is the bike in (front and rear) when you see the problem? Did you install/size chaing as well? What brand/model of bike? If this is your first time installing a derailleur what instructions did you follow? Also, we need a pic from the side of the dropout without the derailleur mounted.

Hi all, Thanks for your help so far. I resized the chain according to the "Largest Cog and Largest Chainring Method" at https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-...-length-sizing.

Here is a diagram of the derailleur: https://www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/...3_page_22.html

I think HillRider figered it out. The "adapter bushing" (13 in the diagram) should be on the other side of the hanger. Oops

The bicycle is a Gazelle Champion Mondial.
