Is this part of my carbon fiber headtube/integrated headset broken? (new to carbon)
This is a view inside the bottom of the headtube. Notice the raised lip on the inside is kind of incomplete; it varies in thickness and has a rough edge.
Is there a metal part of the headset that gets press fit over this, inside the tube? Or do the bearings actually come in contact with this part of the frame?
It uses this type of headset: https://www.canecreek.com/products/headsets/forty
I'm concerned that this should be perfectly round all the way around, and it's going to mess up the headset. Should I send it back?

It really depends on how well and accurate the conical step is made. The bearing seats on this, but before you panic, understand that a bearing is the complete part including the two races and the balls that roll within. So there's a simple locating fit of the conical bearing race into the frame, but no movement between the bearing and frame.

So, it's kind of a sealed set of parts? No actual loose bearings in grease coming in contact with the carbon lip pictured here, correct?

The term is "cartridge bearings", as a lot of bearings are sealed that are still cup-and-cone ones, but yes, it's probably fine. I've seen a BMX frame with an integrated headset that looked far worse than that - the owner had cracked the lower bearing cartridge and not noticed. The bearings still went in fine.

If the thing uses semi integrated i would NOT be worry that much about it. Cant tell for certain if the bike uses integrated or semi integrated headset and from the picture cant tell, not even think out of the link he sent, the 40 series comes in integrated and semi-integrated from what I see.
Good luck.
Good luck.
