My local Tractor Supply Co. store has 4' x 6' horse stall mats for $42. 3/4" thick very heavy rubber and would make a great mat for a work area.

I was looking for a mat to put under my workstand awhile back. Really just wanted something to keep drips off the floor. Didn't want foam, didn't want anything with interlocking pieces, etc... just a large thin rubber mat. At HD I found 3 foot wide rolled thin rubber matting. Bought a few strips of that and duct-taped them together underneath. The matting has shallow grooves in it, which stops small dropped items from rolling away.
