Remember "Tire Savers"?

I hate flats as much as the next guy but I do get tired of using a nice pair of cycling gloves to sweep debris from my tires whenever I ride through some of it. I remember using "tire savers" on my old Peugeot back in the 70s that essentially did the same thing. They consisted of a curved wire piece that was held against the tire tread by two pieces of flexible tubing. Does anyone use these anymore? If not, why did they fall into disuse? Are they harmful to your tires? John

The concensus was that they were ineffective. I never had a set so I can't speak from personal experience. Could be they just weren't "stylish". Equipment fashions in bicycling can be very marketing driven with little basis in utility.

These were quite popular with some riders from my hometown back in the '70s. I can't imagine they could cause any harm. Maybe they are ineffective but I knew some very experienced riders that swore by them. I didn't bother because I thought they looked dorky...

They're still available at Wallingford Bicycle Parts https://www.wallbike.com/tires.html

I think they fell out of favor as sew ups became less common.

As I remember they went out of style about the same time that we all became weight fanatics and started drilling everything out. That and the fact that they were only marginally effective.

I used them as well back then. They made noise, scattered dust all over the bike and prompted your riding partners to endlessly ask if something was "rubbing." After kevlar belted tires came onto the scene, I think tire savers became redundant.
